I agree. I suspect that they are not concerned enough about those who copy books from their Kindle via USB to do anything to prevent it on older devices.

It is more likely that they will discontinue Download & Transfer for all Kindles eventually. Tenth generation and newer Kindles will see continued DRM enhancements to make it difficult to use them for book extraction by copying from the device.

In the U.S. at least, the DMCA explictly prohibits "circumventing" DRM with some limited exceptions (e.g. right to repair). But nobody actually cares as long as you don't start doing things like redistributing the files.
