Why are column settings stored in metadata.calibre?
Opened metadata.calibre in a text editor (just curious). JSON, all standard stuff that I'd expect, but I was wondering that column settings (not just the values, but composite_templates and enum_values) are stored for every single book?

Because it is a complete dump of the books' metadata. Basically equivalent to a collection of metadata.opf files.

It is because the ≅ 12 years ago when that file was added to device management we didn't know all it would be used for. We still don't. For example, it seems Koreader uses the file for something, perhaps metadata searching.
