If you FF to 10:30 in this video, you can see how bad the color graphics look. All dark and with a very noticeable loss of detail. All the dark/shadowy areas have no detail whereas on a Kobo, they do have detail.

Well, the Kobo is definitely missing details in the bright areas, as can clearly be seen at the top right area in the attached image. I think it’s really just a matter of color calibration, the dynamic range is limited on that technology so choices have to be made on whether to prioritize details in the low or high luminance areas.

If I was faced with that choice I’d probably take the same approach as Amazon, as this will likely make black text pop out more on a light background, meaning a slightly better readability for graphic novels. But really I think it’s just a case of give some, take some.

An article on Android Authority has the following quote apparently from Amazon :

Quote:
Customers can connect their new Kindle devices to a computer to transfer files. On Windows, it’ll appear as Kindle in File Explorer. On Mac, customers with the new 2024 devices will need to install additional software (e.g., Android File Transfer or OpenMTP). Customers can still transfer books and documents from their computer via USB or use the Send-to-Kindle service. They can no longer use My Content & Devices to download and transfer books to the new 2024 devices via USB. Content available in My Content & Devices is visible on the device in their Kindle library.
They do not provide a link to the source for this, unfortunately. If real, this would seem to confirm D&T is not coming to the 2024 models.

I have been looking at Amazon's Kindle help pages for any reference to the Download & Transfer function and have not been able to find anything. I could very well be missing something. Perhaps it was never documented online.

Does anyone else know of any place where Amazon describes this feature?

One thing I noticed about Amazon's updated Connect, Browse, and Transfer Files on E-Reader web page is this statement:

Quote:
Note: There's no need to select an eject button on the Mac or Windows computer. To eject the Kindle, select the Disconnect button on the Kindle screen or unplug the USB cable from the computer.
That really only applies to the new Kindles that connect using MTP. Pulling the cable without ejecting is actually actually very bad advice for older models.

I'm pretty sure Amazon would like their customers to brick their older Kindles, so that they'd be forced to buy one of the current crop of devices and lose the option to deDRM their books.

Joking aside, presumably an oversight...

I only found it under Kindle Keyboard help section:
https://d1ergij2b6wmg5.cloudfront.ne...r_From_PC.html

Funnily enough, it's missing from Kindle 1, 2 and DX. Perhaps they forgot to remove it from the Keyboard.

I guess this means Amazon is planning to ditch the option altogether.

It is in the KFX Output customizations that show when you select KFX as the output format and click on KFX Output in the left column when converting an ebook using calibre.

That’s the nail in the coffin for D&T. Hopefully we’ll get other ways to download and de-DRM our purchases in the future.

The only thing I see is that the story accurately describes the current situation. It does not mean the current situation is permanent, or that it is even intentional on the part of Amazon.

When I went looking a few days ago, all I found was the same Connect, Browse, and Transfer Files on E-Reader page that you did.

While I suspect that D&T is on its way out, I hope they take a boiling frog approach and leave pre-2024 Kindles alone so that as time passes most Kindles won't have D&T because new Kindles never had it in the first place and not because it was removed from a Kindle that once had it.

I agree with nabsltd. This is an unattributed story likely sourced from online forums like MobileRead and other anecdotal evidence. That's not a "nail in the coffin".

Amazon does not appear to have made any statement about Download and transfer via USB, so what they plan is just speculation. Though I do speculate that D&T is on its way out. I just hope they take a boiling frog approach and leave pre-2024 Kindles alone so that as time passes most Kindles won't have D&T because they never had it in the first place and not because it was removed from a Kindle that once had it.

I also suspect that if Amazon does end D&T, those of us with pre-2024 Kindles will get an email from Amazon telling us this.

I might be missing something but the article itself quotes what they call "the official company statement", which includes the sentence "They can no longer use My Content & Devices to download and transfer books to the new 2024 devices via USB.". How is that not a statement about D&T?

Sorry, my bad. I should have read the Android Authority article more carefully. Though the attribution is a little ... odd. I tried googling and couldn't find it anywhere else. I take the attribution with a grain of salt.

Though I do believe D&T is on its way out.

I did the same thing. The only references that I can find online lead back to this article.
