More entries for “recently opened”?

Hi all,

I personally shuffled between 5~6 books at a time, and I wonder if there is a way to have more entries in the “recently opened” both in Home Screen or drop down tab while reading.

Thanks!

I’m afraid there’s no preference setting to change the amount of books “recently opened“ displays.

Quoth’s idea is a good one. You can also pop back to the homepage and see your four most recently read books along the top.

Neither of those options are as handy as that pull down sheet, though.

I do the same, and would also find having more recent books showing on the home screen useful. However, there are problems with this, because the available space in the upper half of the screen is limited.

Reducing the size of each thumbnail is one theoretically possible solution, but my view is that four is a sensible upper limit - especially with the small screens that I favour.

Another possibility would be to allow left/right scrolling of the recent books. But the response time of the e-Ink screen is poor. Kindle offers this sort of scrolling, and my view is that it's unusable. The utterly awful Kindle Home screen is one reason why I gave up on them in favour of Kobo a few years ago.

TBH, I think that Quoth's solution is the best available.

I don't know if it's possible to write patches that'd increase the number of recently read books on either the home screen or the drop-down tab. Giving the option to users like this would be great: we could choose whether or not to use them. I'd probably use it for the drop-down, but not the Home screen. However, AFAIK none (yet) exists. Writing them is way beyond my own capabilities.

I use a To Be Read collection (managed with Calibre— KoboTouch's collection management and the Reading List plugin) made up of the books I'm currently reading and a few others. Usually the last-opened collection will appear on the home-screen (occasionally it randomly switches) for easy access.

I have a very large number of books in my Unread (= your To Be Read) collection - well over 200 - so I use a slightly more sophisticated approach. In addition to the Unread collection, there is a Partly Read one (usually with about half a dozen or so books in it). As I read books, they get moved from Unread, to Partly Read, and finally to Read. Obviously, this requires a bit more administration than your approach.

I haven't come across the Reading List plugin. It sounds interesting, so I'd better look into it.

In Calibre I have my backlog/pile of shame and my shorter more immediate to-be-read list. On the Kobo I just use the built-in filters for read/unread.

There's no shame to having a lot of unread books. Think of it as a wine cellar.

I simply drop everything on to my e-reader, whether read or not. It has capacity to spare, so I take advantage of that. Calibre manages it all nicely.

I just wish recently opened was smarter and didn't count any newly added book as recently opened.

I wish it could be disabled, and the UI matched the Reading settings UI, except for dogearing.

It's possible to use Kobo Utilities plugin to set the 'date added' from a column.

Sorry if I am dense. What does that do?

It affects how books are sorted when using 'recent' or 'date added' sorting on the device.

Thank you all for the interesting ideas!
I’ll see if Quoth’s approach will do it for me, and request a patch if it’s really needed.

Thanks a lot and wish everyone here happy reading
