Even with two books of the same format (e.g., standard hardcover, etc.), the same last page number, and the same reading font, it doesn't tell anything about reading time.

Take, for example, James Patterson. His books "waste" over 50 pages compared to many books, because there are so many chapters, which mean blank space at the end of the chapter, and mostly blank (just the chapter number) space to start.

Any page number algorithm that uses actual word count is much more useful in comparing two books than the arbitrary page count from physical books, or anything based on screen count/page turns for an eBook.

ADE algorithm doesn't use word count. It uses byte count from files in the compressed EPUB, so things that are more easily compressed will count as fewer "pages" than harder to compress things. Also, anything in the manifest counts for ADE, so a lot of images or fonts can throw off the algorithm.

APNX in "slow" or "accurate" mode turns out to be the most accurate overall, as both word and paragraph count are part of the calculation, and only text is counted.

APNX is very much inaccurate. When you get an APNX from Amazon to give you page numbers, it's based on some pBook version which as we know is inaccurate.

A hardcover, MMPB, trade paperback, & eBook should all have different page numbers.

It's a more modern version of arguing about the nature of the Trinity.

At some point, my Count Pages got set away from my custom setting to 'E-book viewer' - since I don't know when this happened, I don't know how many books have inaccurate counts and will probably just redo them all to be sure.

My question is that this is likely a user error (e.g. a misclick) or has anybody else had the same thing occur?

I use the plugin multiple times a day, never happened to me.

FTR, I do have the "just do it" option set and I run with Alt+C.

Same here. It just works. FWIW I use the APNX algorithm, simply to be able to compare

I also just noticed that my chars-per-page somehow got reset to the default of 1500 (I use 1200). Seems to indicate that at least part of the settings had gotten reset at some point but I am not sure how.

I followed this entire tutorial LINK for setting up page count, but even after transferring the book (via Calibre) to my Kindle, it only shows by location. I can’t seem to get it to display by pages. Does this feature even work on the Kindle Paperwhite 12th generation? Could someone upload any book that displays pages so I can check if it works at all on this latest Kindle generation?

@srdjanprpa Take a look at this discussion:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...39#post4462739

My guess would be that it looks like newer firmware builds probably have a bug related to using Calibre generated & transfered .apnx files (those contain page count mapping information) that are needed for both old mobi and newer azw3 book formats (the latest format KFX has that information internally).

And since your Kindle model's factory firmware is newer then firmware build other people started noticing problems with missing page count progress indicator there really is nothing for you do to other than hope that the problem gets fixed in future updates.

That is assuming Amazon didn't break it intentionally
People with older Kindle models could at least hope to jailbreak their Kindle and then downgrade firmware to an older bug-free version... but for your 12th gen there isn't any older firmware than the one it came out with.

Kindle firmware keeps getting progressively worse and more buggy with each update. .. expecially since Amazon hired people to rewrite most of Kindle UI using React Native.
