No buttons. Well, I guess once my original Oasis really kicks the bucket, I'll be going to kobo or pocketbook.
Not looking forward to learning a new system, sigh... |

Does anyone here actually have a PW6, PW6SE, or Colorsoft in their hands? I'm morbidly curious what the firmware version it ships with is.

My Kobo Clara Colour has no buttons and I do not think I would find the ones with buttons comfortable. They look very much like Oasis's, which I never found comfortable. And I did not like having to flip to change hands. You can side load, but it does not become part of your library. I'm using it mostly for library borrowing; those do merge with your Kobo library. I have not tried library borrowing with PocketBook but creates an Adobe ID that is shared across devices and apps registered with your PB account so it should be possible to side load or download .acsm file with the browser, and that will get added to PB cloud for the borrowing period. In terms of purchasing ebooks, Kobo has a USA storefront and PB does not. PB doesn't have a credit card on file for me so I don't even know if it is possible to purchase and presumably it would involve currency conversion to do so. Not a problem really and I've removed the Store icon (no hack needed) so there is nothing resembling recommendations, which I like. Kobo is a lot more like Kindle in that the Store and recommendations are always there. Both support AZW3 (DRM free) but I always convert that to ePub (or KePub in case of Kobo). There won't be a Colorsoft in public hands until Oct. 30.

(If they do it, I'd guess it's via send-to-kindle like they did with epubs) |

And Kobo is very friendly to sideloading. You just can't sync your sideloaded books between different devices, that's the only disadvantage. Last edited by Sirtel; 10-17-2024 at 05:19 PM. |

Nothing here that's compelling to me. But given that my Kindle Keyboard still works, I expect to be using my Oasis 3 for a good long time.

honestly outside of the Colorsoft it looks like the new Kindles are basically minor revisions from a user standpoint.
If I had just bought an older model and could return it and basically get the new ones for the same price I would. The Colorsoft is tempting but not at the cost of trading in a device and $224+tax-trade in value |

When I got my Go6 I thought that I'd keep reading on my Poke5 until I'd plumbed all the depth of software on the Go6. But I switched over to the Go6 (with Carta 1300) as soon as I got rid of the worst software flaws. Contrast matters.

Personally the ads have never bothered me and I have in fact started some book series that I saw as ads on my Voyage that I probably wouldn't have found. I'm not paying extra in ads removal or in MSRP. Does Kobo do ads? If they do, they're still cheaper. Boox doesn't do ads and if they're more expensive, the devices can do more than just read.

[QUOTE=Paperbackstash;4460199]
And yes officially not planning on buttons again, unless they change their minds one day https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/16/...ysical-buttons I saw that article too and it's a bummer. I'm going to baby my K3 and Voyage even more now so I can have my buttons for a long time. Hopefully by the time they're ready for retirement, Amazon will have come back to buttons. If not then I'll hop on another brand with buttons. |
