It's interesting to me, looking at the number of reviews, that the Kindles have a lot of reviews, close to the number of reviews for individual branded tablets. For example the newest Kindle Paperwhite has 61,000 reviews where two of the latest fire tablets have 15,000 and 17,000 reviews. I would like to see the number of people using the Kindle app vs a Kindle vs the number of pages read. |

Why? I would think the only number that would matter to Amazon would be total dollars spent through app purchases vs total dollars spent through Kindle purchases. Seems pretty obvious to me which one's higher. Do you really doubt the niche status of eink in today's e-content consumption market?

If they're losing money on Kindle sales, do they nevertheless drive enough additional book sales (i.e., over what they would sell without Kindles) to more than make up for the loss. Even if Kindles are profitable, are they sufficiently profitable to be worth the resources used, including management attention. |

Sure. But my question to John was why do you need proof that eink is a niche way to consume ebooks. I didn't think there was any doubt on that front. I hope they do continue to provide quality devices for those who prefer eink, but if they do, I don't think it will be because eink users read more pages than app readers.

If I wasn't clear before, I'm less interested in econtent, and more interested in ebooks. If nothing else, since we keep seeing things like "In fact the majority of people do use an app on a phone, and secondarily on a tablet. The eink is 3rd place.", I would be interested in seeing the numbers. I don't want to project, but reading novels on a phone seems questionable? Sure, casual reading, one or two a year, but 20, 30, 50, ...? |

As much as I like my eInk Kindle, and feel it is the superior way to read eBooks, so many more times a day I read off my phone because...it's right there. |

You don't have to read the whole novel on a phone (though I'm sure many do) for the numbers to be relevant. For me, it's the fact that the phone is always there for a chapter or two whenever a spare moment presents itself. I can't say the same for my tablet (let alone my eink device). Without my phone, my only other choice would be to read nothing while I'm waiting for my haircut or doctor's appointment. I couldn't read the 20, 30, 50 books a year I read without making use of my phone and all of those spare moments.

Well then I hope you get those numbers you seem to need. I just go with what I see. My family, friends and coworkers are all big readers (20, 30, 50 novels a year). Of those that have adopted ebooks, none but me own an eink device. Maybe I live in a weird anti-eink bubble, but I doubt it.

Kindle Kids has now disappeared from Amazon UK. The only new Kindles available are Paperwhite Kids and Scribe. What on earth is going on?

Of the big readers I know who have adopted ebooks, I think they all use eink. Maybe one uses a tablet. But my sample size is small. |

They have been going in and out for stock for weeks. In the US store ATM only the Scribe is in stock. What I am surprised about is that after all this time the Kindle landing page still links the older 8GB Paperwhite 5 instead of the updated 16GB that is linked in the hamburger menu and the top bar. It used to be a dead link but now the old 8GB OPW5 page just shows stock is unavailable.

I offered to gift her a New one that she liked (her area did not offer much in Local device selection). She had tons of paper books, an Internet connection, so that was not a limiting issue. |
