So, I've been having trouble updating/downloading stories from the Japanese webnovel site Syosetu the last few weeks.
I'm unsure if its just on my end but I've been getting errors such as this:

Looks like it's probably a site change to me. I've opened an issue and tagged the original developer of that adapter.

I am currently receiving an odd error when I try to edit the metadata of a fic. It seems to only be one. The error is UnicodeEncodeError:'utf-8' codec can't encode character '\ud83d' in position 19737: surrogates not allowed.
I don't know enough about coding to know what this means/if it's fixable. I've tried re-downloading the fic and the same error persists.
I can both edit the actual text of the book and open the file to read, just not edit metadata.
It's possible this is a calibre problem, not specifically fanficfare, but again I don't really know enough to be sure.

I assume there's a bad character in the story description. But without the story URL, I can't say anymore.

Regardless, I think you were right in speculating it's a Calibre thing, not a FFF thing.

Thanks! That was the issue. I turned off the column I use to store all metadata for backups, which would have been the only thing that would save the series title, and it fixed the problem.

I am using the most updated version. I would guess calibre might have some problems reading emojis inside long-text columns.

Ah, so it's actually Saved Metadata Column, but only when the long column has 'Interpret this column as' set to HTML instead of Plain text.

I'm not sure why that would make a difference. But the fact I can't see to make it happen through the Calibre interface suggests FFF could/should be doing something different. Still investigating.

Regardless, I recommend 'Plain text' instead of HTML for the metadata column because Calibre changes the HTML significantly if you edit it and than FFF can't read it back again.

I'd recommend changing that aspect of the custom column instead of turning FFF Saved Metadata Column off altogether.
