I worry about our future, who will look after me when I'm old and senile?

I just bought a pizza. The teller rang it in and it came out to $15.54. I handed her a $20 and then found I had 4 cents so I handed it to her. Unfortunately she had already rung in the $20 so the display on the till said $4.46. I swear I could hear the IM bell go off in her head and her eye balls were spinning. It says $4.46 and you handed me 4 cents.

Luckily there was experienced help on hand so she called her over to make meaning of the world. Her coworker confidently walked over and closed the till drawer. She then rang in the order and it came out as $14.11 and not $15.54. Bonus for me. With distaste the original teller handed me back my 4 cents and like magic I changed it into 11 cents and handed it to Miss Experience. She smiled and handed me back a $10.

Stupid me I shook my head and told her that she only owed me $6 and handed the $10 back. She counted out the $6 and then asked if I gave the original genius a $20. I assured her I had and by this time, I'm sorry but the tip was just not going to happen. I walked out the door got in my car and the store manager comes running out waving his arms at me asking if I paid.

I guess all the math students are working at the donut shops.

I had lunch with a couple of colleagues.
The bill came to £25, so we each gave the waitress £10, a total of £30.
As the £5 change couldn't be tidily divided between us, we asked for £1 each in change and told the waitress to keep the odd £2 as a tip.

We ended up paying £27 each for meal ((3 x £10) - (3 x £1 in change)) + £2 tip = £29 in total.

Never did figure out where the missing £1 went from the original £30.

(It's an old riddle, but still good for the odd argument.)

They actually are math students - math students can do math, but they cannot calculate (thats a quote I heard from a couple of math students and Profs, so it must be true

Why did you add the £2 tip? It was already defined by negation. You had the £30, and took away the change.

Running back and forth from patient to desktop. Now the Admin nurse is saying this is the first she's heard of it. I plan on discussing this with her in front of the cabinet that she had orderd special to hold the tablets whilst charging.

Ah. Bistro Math.

If you had not added the bit about it being a riddle, it might have taken some people longer to figure out... then again, people might have been a bit more stern with you for your error.

(About 45 seconds, in my case. Sorry, z-chan. I don't enjoy doing this sort of math, especially first thing in the morning, but since it was a riddle I thought I'd look it over to see where the "trick" was. Oddly enough, to me it didn't look like a riddle at all, just bad math. I'm far to literally-minded about these things.

I got it instantly. It's that smarmy bastiche from Accounts. He never puts in enough, denies he had a second drink, always "forgets" his wallet, sneaks out before his shout of drinks.
