I think I disagree with you, but I admit that I'm having difficulty following your argument closely enough to be sure.

But let me put it this way: taxes are the price I pay to have roads and firefighters, mail delivery, schools, hospitals, police, armed forces that at least in principle are intended to preserve my country from invasion, and a social safety net that, if rickety, is at least a first step to keeping old people from starving in the streets and women from giving birth in ditches.

On balance, I like having all these things. If you don't like them, that is certainly your right, but I like them.

I know I can't have them unless they are paid for; nothing comes for free. Until we figure out how to grow money on trees, that requires taxes of some sort. Given all that, I don't actually care enough about the details to run around pestering people who should be using their time keeping the roads repaired and the garbage collected to show me the exact place in the exact law book where taxes and tax collection are set up.

I know I can't get something for nothing, and wouldn't consider it honorable or even clever on my part to try.

So, back to e-book readers. Can somebody refresh my memory as to whether the True will display pdfs and allow annotation and search? And will it be part of the EZ Reader or the Mentor line?

I never mentioned getting something for nothing, nor whether it is honourable or not to try to do so.

If you wish your society to continue paying interest to a private organisation that holds your currency and thereby your economy and your elected officials to ransom then that is of course your right. I'm sure the Rothschilds and the other 11 families that own the Federal Reserve Bank are quite happy with the status quo as well.

To each their own and all that.

Cheers,

Someone please drop by PKFFW's tent and check those oxygen tanks, I think he's running lean again.

There is probably a research paper somewhere on the net which examines the propensity of long forum threads to attract disaffected kooks, effete snobs and specious basement dwellers. Sadly, this is probably their only social outlet and they will probably not go away. Oh well...

I was in Fryes this morning. They had a large display of E-book readers, all of the major brands were present and it was nice to compare the screens side by side: EZ-reader, Jetbook, Sony, and one unidentified knock-off thingy. One of the sales guys even had his Kindle 1.0 on hand. I was surprized that the Jetbook had the most alluring screen of them all. It has nice blueish tint on the background which makes the e-ink letters very crisp and easy to read. The worst display was the Sony 707. Sony ruined that display. The EZ-reader, Jetbook and unidentified knock-off were ALL sold out. The Sony model was there, unsold stacks of them in the glass case. Somebody at Sony won't be getting a sales bonus this quarter.

From another thread I was reading, the Jetbook actually has a non-backlit LCD screen rather than e-ink so that may account for the difference in color.

The description of the display is interesting since the Fry's closest to me is a 5 hour trip. Were you able to handle the display models at all? If so, to what degree (i.e. just push the buttons where they were anchored in place, or on a tether, or have a sales guy actually let you hold it)? Seeing more than one brand on display would definitley feel like more of a shopping experience so that is great.

Thank you.

Is that a long winded way of saying I'm incorrect? That the FRB is not a privately owned institution?

You ARE right. The FRB *is* a privetely owned institution.
Anybody can look it up. Not that I care.(*)
Somebody told me a while ago, and I could not believe, so I looked it up. A good starting point is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_reserve_bank

(*) an American company has taken over a big plant here (central Europe). The plant is a major employer - direct and indirect - for lots of people here. And they screwed our local economy together with American economy.

And now, please, pretty please, let us talk about that sub-$200 5" device with e-ink screen and folder support ;-)

I think name-calling is uncalled for.

Why don't we all try to play nice, please, as we examine issues and express opinions.

Thank you,

Can we PLEASE get back on topic?

My one desire for all the EZ Reader/Mentor models is the ability to to delete books on the reader! Three of my four readers do this and I sorely miss it on my EZ Reader!

Good grief; the EZ Reader won't let you delete books? Do you have to hook it up to the computer to do that or something?

That sounds like a great opportunity, seeing so many e-book readers side-by-side like that. I've heard the Jetbook has an un-backlit LCD screen also, which I suppose means it pulls a little power all the time to maintain the display. Does anyone know what its battery life is compared to a Kindle's or a Sony's?

Yes. I keep books on an SD card. I put the SD card in my laptop and add/delete books from it. The alternative it to connect the EZ Reader to a computer via a USB cable. It's not that big a deal, but I have gotten into the habit of deleting books as soon as I finish them. Plus when I'm experimenting with formats, I might have 4 or 5 versions of the same book loaded. By the time I get the SD back into the computer, I've usually forgotten which ones to delete. If I could delete directly from the EZ Reader, this would be much less error prone.

The jetBook is rated at 24 hours. It is way better than a Touch, but nowhere near any of the e-ink readers! My Touch is good for 3 or 4 hours of reading on a charge. I typically charge my EZ Reader up once a week and battery indicator rarely shows less than full.

First off, apologies for unleashing a can of worms. I suppose a thread hi-jacking can start with the smallest of comments.

I plan on waiting until the faster Epson-controlled E-Ink devices are released, and then I will make my decisions on purchase. I alread know I do not want an LCD reader, due to eye strain, and direct-sun UNreadability. Also, glass-screened large format E-Ink readers are out of the question as well. So once a reasonably priced large-format flexi-screen comes out, I'll start window-shopping.
