Link to a book in library

I have a short story that the author has earlier published in a fanzine, and then an expanded version of the same story published in a novella format (with a different name) and I'd like to add links to the description so I could just jump to the other version - is this possible? And if not, what would be the best way of handling cases like this (preferably without custom columns - it doesn't feel efficient to have a custom column for such a specific purpose).

See "Open a book details window on a book in some library'" in The calibre:// URL scheme — calibre 7.17.0 documentation

You can get the link by right clicking empty space in the Book details panel, viz:

I have a long text custom column in my libraries called Links/#links, which is where I put the link, viz:

Thanks, by copying the link to display the book in library works nicely, as does copying a link directly to view a format. The link to display the book information doesn't quite work as I'd like, as the pop-up window you get isn't the same as you get when pressing I - it's missing any active link content and you can't open the book for reading from that window. But never mind, copying the link to a format and writing that in the description works pretty much as I was wishing for.

Why not put a view-book link for the relevant format into the same column in which you have the show-details link?

I often put show-book, book-details and view-book links to Book B into Book A's Link/#links column, and vice-versa into Book B's Link/#links column. In some cases multiple view-book links for different formats.

I don't have all that many books I want to link, and it feels a bit more natural to have something like "... <link>expanded version</link> first published in ..." in the book's description rather than in a separate column - just a personal preference, I suppose.

When I use the "link to show book details in a popup window", I do not see the according book image. Is this intentionally?

Works for me. Does that Test book actually have cover?

Yep, my mileage varies
  1. I avoid overloading columns with multiple purposes;
  2. I avoid editing metadata for a single book in the Edit metadata->Edit metadata individually dialogues, I prefer to do it in the Book list with F2;
  3. Comments can't be edited from the Book list;
  4. I can put my Links/#links column toward the top of metadata in Book details, Comments is always the bottom.

Good catch! The short answer is: No, and Yes.
No, there is really no automagically generated cover picture as the "open book folder" showed.
But yes, because both the "Edit metadata" and "Book Details" pop-ups suggest there is one (even 1200x1600). A case of dummy image insert, which certainly mislead me.
A suggestion would be to make the behavior similar: When there is no cover, do not show anything (my preference), or let all pop-ups show a dummy image for a consistent behavior.

I override default_cover.png (the blue curlicue bestrewn image) with a blank image of similar size in %APPDATA%\calibre\resource\images.
