Amazon removed books from my Kindle - Page 33

A few days ago, maybe a week. Lost all sideloaded books. This is apparently still happening :/

It's time to dump the Kindle and move to Kobo where Amazon has no access to any eBooks on a Kobo.

I'm actually glad that mine died. I have replaced it with a Pocketbook and I couldn't be happier.

I feel concerned that Amazon is catching up to people downloading free ebooks and is purposefully making it harder for us to have nice things. Like I am trying to download books from calibre into my Kindle and it's not working.

Are you trying to load epubs, by any chance? Those won't work.

Maybe it's time to actively tell people to only sideload their books with the PDOC tag set? (KF8 and CDETYPE set to PDOC?).

I mean Calibre setting the EBOK tag by default it's still in the end, a trick done to the device into believing a book is actually a purchase, which I believe it's something Amazon has started to not like.

Sending the books as PDOC might be a trick too, but as jhowell reported, their PDOC books weren't removed.

If PDOC books do still get removed, then we can finally conclude the bug/whatever-hidden-feature-amazon-added affects all manually sidelaoded books regardless of metadata and advice to stop sideloading.

After a few months of testing, my finding is just do not turn off wifi for a prolonged period of time. My sideloaded books are still intact after few months with wifi on. Switching on the wifi from a prolonged period from airplane mode will somehow nuke all the sideloaded books.

No, it's a bug that Amazon is deleting ebooks.

Inability to copy from Calibre to Kindle is something else.

I just fell for this bug. I purchased a book on Amazon and wanted it on my kindle (obviously) and turned off airplane mode and all of a sudden the device freezes up as if it's was doing stuff in the background. I thought nothing off it until the device went back to normal but I realized that all my books that I had sideloaded had just vanished. I check the kindle files on my computer (USB) and my suspicious were right, Amazon had just wiped my entire library.

So sad that Amazon is (obviously) ignoring this issue. I had over 300 bookmarks and notes saved. Good thing I have a good practice of backing up things and I had exported all my kindle notes to my computer. Now I just have to backup the entire kindle device and never take the damn thing off Airplane mode again.

That's why the solution is to keep WiFi off and side-load via calibre.

I'm with Wolf on this. I'd refuse to use/buy a kindle or buy books from Amazon until they fix this bug.

So that your battery can get depleted faster and you can have every buggy update sprung on you without any chance of going back to the previous firmware (unless you jailbreak)? No, thanks. YMMV, of course.

It is, of course, your choice. I don't find the battery drain excessive when I leave the wi-fi on and I can't blame Amazon for not fixing a problem that only arises if you don't connect to the Amazon server frequently enough: your choice, but you also choose the expected consequences.
