Events: the leftist political parties hold public meetings and people come and listen to speeches and music and to drink beer. The weather is perfect today for this.

The most die-hard socialists are also out, waving the red flag.

It's a (national) holiday in Germany (one of three, this one (on a regular base) since '33). My mother is celebrating her birthday, so I'll spent my day in a Restaurant and afterwards eating cake with the family - I could think of worse ways to spend a day
Politicians use this day to talk about work, progress, future plans, etc The unions traditionally rant about some social problems and present plans. Extremist groups (both left and right) use this day for riots.

Bananas ?
I hope not!

Grapes ?
Perhaps some fermented ones, so I dislike them normally.

Chocolate ?
Definitely on the cake, perhaps some hot one too. Other chocolate can be left at the door, I'll collect it

Nope - Pizza, Cake, Coke, Chocolate, Coffee and other stuff like that.

On the 1st of May, we get up early in the morning and go into the garden and wash our faces in the morning dew (this is to ensure a beautiful complexion through the rest of the year -- not yet worked for me, but I keep hoping).

When I was a child, after breakfast we would run around the garden picking wildflowers which we would put into baskets. The baskets were usually paper cones with a ribbon handle or a Pringles tube covered in paper -- see avatar. (In the UK it is frowned upon to pick wildflowers because so many are endangered, so now we have to use supermaket flowers.)

We would then go around to our friends' and neighbours' houses and place the baskets on their doorknobs, ring the bell, and run away so they wouldn't know who had given them flowers. We would then pile into the car, drop my father at the train station, and go to the donut shop and get donuts to eat on the way to school. (You just knew donuts had to come into the story at some point!)

Nice flowers, Zee. Thank you! I have no clue what those are but my guess would be "something-or-other bells" Lily of the Valley. I hear that they are highly scented. (ahem!)

all right then, lily of the valley ! now we know. on every street corner there will be little stands set up to sell individual sprigs or little plants in pots, and you'll see half the city walking around with some in their hands.

the other half of the city has gone away for the long weekend. *sigh*

I don't have any flowers to give, but I can offer a wad of dust bunnies (not for those allergic to wispy grey fluff), stack of paper to be recycled, and a collection of logo-emblazoned items received at conferences. Someone here decided today should be our official office cleaning day. Oh, I do have a tin of mints to share...just don't ask me how long they've been in the back corner of that drawer.
