1/2 day off - though in my company it's been added to the 1/2 day off at Constitution Day July 5th and then I have all that day off instead. Events: the leftist political parties hold public meetings and people come and listen to speeches and music and to drink beer. The weather is perfect today for this. The most die-hard socialists are also out, waving the red flag. |

It's been answered ('Tag der Arbeit', Day after the Walpurgisnacht (with Maienstecken)).

On the 1st of May, we get up early in the morning and go into the garden and wash our faces in the morning dew (this is to ensure a beautiful complexion through the rest of the year -- not yet worked for me, but I keep hoping).
When I was a child, after breakfast we would run around the garden picking wildflowers which we would put into baskets. The baskets were usually paper cones with a ribbon handle or a Pringles tube covered in paper -- see avatar. (In the UK it is frowned upon to pick wildflowers because so many are endangered, so now we have to use supermaket flowers.) We would then go around to our friends' and neighbours' houses and place the baskets on their doorknobs, ring the bell, and run away so they wouldn't know who had given them flowers. We would then pile into the car, drop my father at the train station, and go to the donut shop and get donuts to eat on the way to school. (You just knew donuts had to come into the story at some point!) ![]() |

I don't have any flowers to give, but I can offer a wad of dust bunnies (not for those allergic to wispy grey fluff), stack of paper to be recycled, and a collection of logo-emblazoned items received at conferences. Someone here decided today should be our official office cleaning day. Oh, I do have a tin of mints to share...just don't ask me how long they've been in the back corner of that drawer.
