Good point - I stand corrected.

I guess I have a blind spot when it comes to Sony - they "ignored" me for so long I tend to ignore them now.

Anyhow, I hope BeBook don't drop the Mobi DRM format. The inclusion of ePub wasn't accompanied with a rumour to drop Mobi, but the CyBook fiasco makes me wonder. Of course, end of the day you can buy any format and make them DRM-less for personal use. That's fine for someone who doesn't mind a little effort, but for the average Joe who wants to buy a reader and load some books, no mess no fuss, it sucks.

I hate DRM, but if it persists, the more formats supported on each device the easier it is for honest consumers. But as usual they are the ones DRM, DMCA and the publishing industry effectively treats like criminals and screws over. C'est la vie.

Well, since the navigation looking up a word is so slow I can live with looking up word using MobiPocket on my phone since it takes approximately the same time.

The final Firmware update should come in a few weeks.

So we could imagine that Booken having to provide E-Pub support on April 30 and no later for Weltbild could have decided to focus on this customer first and release a firmware on time but without all the features (eg. Mobipocket suppport), and this could have delayed the final firmware version release...
(Translation from Bookeen-speak-to-English) It should be available sometime shortly before their 1st-gen Gen3 purchasers die of old age.

Here is the response to an email to Bookeen Support

We will release the new firmware in a few weeks. Please be sure that you
will be informed and have more information as soon as we release it.

Good news: I asked specifically about Mobi support, and got this answer:

Quote:
We are not willing to drop support for the Mobipocket DRM.
Please be sure that we will find a solution for all our user that read like you prc files.

Best regards,

I hope they at least release some firmware version that supports DRM-free Mobipocket and ePUB.

It marginally easier (but still of doubtful legality some places) to strip the DRM from Adobe ePub than from MOBI, see Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented. A disadvantage of ePub DRM is that you need a Desktop Adobe Digital Editions to download the ebook, and this is Windows and Mac only (no Linux version). MOBI can be downloaded by any web browser.

The best approach, given MobiPocket's conditions, would be to provide two firmwares:
  • DRM-free ePub and DRMed MOBI
  • DRM-free MOBI and DRMed ePub
However, I'm not sure that Adobe would allow a DRM-free version of its reader to be released, let alone MobiPocket. Even though Adobe charges $75K for the ePub/PDF reader license it probably still requires allowing DRMed ebooks, because Adobe makes money from them too.
