Open to other brands, Kobo/Boox/etc, but it seems there hasn't been a generational leap yet in ereader technology, discounting color.

The only upgrade from the Oasis 3 is the PW5.

Pretty much what I figured but wanted to check in with y'all here, much more up to date than myself with the market.

I think eink technology is now mature enough that there may never be any huge leaps anymore - updates will be incremental, just like it is with computers, tablets and phones. Unless someone invents another technology entirely.

BW screens are probably as good as it's going to get. Speed and battery life could well improve. How much is the question. Probably incremental unless, as you write, some invents new technology. Are they using high end chips or is eink the factor limiting speed? |

Colour eink will not get better. Kaleido is a 4 year old system that could have been done earlier. It's coloured dots on a mono eink screen. ACeP is brighter for secondary colours and white, but poorer for primary R G & B and after nearly 10 years about 10 times slower than regular eink. The primary R G & B is dimmer because it's subtractive cyan, yellow and magenta. Quality paper printing uses more than that, using 8 to 30+ colours and black. Only the cheapest poorest quality printing is just four inks (or four toners for laser, which is using 1200 to 2400 dpi dithering and does dark primaries). The only future for eink is dedicated mono ereaders and price tags. Kobo have made a bad error dropping the 7″ mono model. Last edited by Quoth; 07-22-2024 at 03:59 PM. |

Colour adds so much life, its worth it, and yes maybe slightly darker than B/W but not that much, and still clearly able to read without issues
