Must be a southern U.S. thing. I've heard them called Avon "books" all my life. I never heard of them coming back to get them, though...

Those salesladies have to pay for those books, don't they? Why on earth would they be cold-calling and dropping them off willynilly? And why on earth would they come back to collect the book?

If they come, dear peanut, don't let this person into your house. Sounds very suspicious.

It's quite common in the UK to get a catalogue delivered, and then collected a few days later - with your order (I told her I didn't need any lipstick just now, being a male sparrow I find it clogs my beak

First class woudl actually be more, since the bulk mail comes pre-sorted and there's a lot of it.

i get catalogues all the time. nobody ever comes to take them back though, unfortunately. what really amuses me is the clever ploys they constantly come up with trying to trick me into thinking i'm a special customer getting an exceptional offer. this week for instance, i got an eveloppe marked "with our apologies, here is your indemnity". inside, there is a "check" for 33€ (off any order of 53€ or more) but the most hilarious part is the letter :

"Dear Madame,
you may have been directly affected by some incidents in our service.

Some brief but bothersome perturbations were the result of unexpectedly high activity, due to the craze over our spring and summer collections... which required all our efforts. In fact, it's perhaps for this reason that we have not heard from you lately...

We hope you can forgive us for this Madame ! In order to respect our engagements and to provide you the best possible service, we insist upon indemnising those who were affected... So a check-reduction has been specially written to you, and we hope you won't hesitate to take advantage of it and get back in touch with us."

it's just a little gem of twisted psychological marketeer-ese.

i'll break it down for you. what they want me to think is, the new spring and summer collections they're selling are SO HOT that people are climbing all over each other to snap them up.

so much so, their lines were all tied up and maybe their website was even down ! (yeah right.)

it's entirely possible i may have tried to get through to place a mega-huge order right when that was (hypothetically...) happening. but, i would have been unable to ! ô tragedy !

that is the only possible explanation for the fact that i haven't sent them any money lately !!

so, here is a nifty "reduction" of 33€ (providing i order at least 53€ worth of merchandise, which means i've got to give them at least 20€ of my own money regardless) to make it up to me, and hopefully motivate me to SPEND SOME MONEY and buy their stuff !

because they miss me. personally.
