If this turns out to be true, I hope Amazon finally realizes that Mobi will, in the end, be one of the loosers (I certainly won't buy another prc title).
I also still don't get it why they bought Mobipocket since they never seemed commited to the format...

The other things you mention are of no interest to me at all.
Harry BeBook (an I expect other Hanlin Clones) all support mobi and folder support.

Amazon is using a slightly modified Mobipocket format for their AZW Kindle eBooks. And I suspect that Amazon used Mobipocket to populate the Kindle store when they first started selling the Kindle.

That one is easy: they used mobipocket technology to create Kindle format. And Amazon could not adopt "plain" mobipocket format, because that would have scared every other device manufacturer. Exclusivity of DRM scheme enforced by Mobipocket means that the best one can do is to create a Kindle clone? Who would buy the clone, when you can have "the real thing"?

And very poor Kindle clone that would be, considering that Whispernet is not open to any other device.

Yes, that makes some sense.
And they probably did not simply use the Mobi format because they wanted to be the exclusive seller of Kindle books. So they needed a new format...

So, basically, Mobipocket is, as far as Amazon is concerned, doomed...

Is it just me that sees a future with just AZW and Epub (and, for some applications and devices, PDF)?

Far from it.

When Kindle 3 (the european edition) is ready, it is trivial to add Mobipocket DRM to it, as a special courtesy to the customers who have invested into Mobi DRM. At that moment, Cybook is out of the game, Mobipocket store can be merged into Amazon proper...

EPUB and PDF, yes.

BUT AZW? This is Amazon-only. And, even if Amazon may think otherwise - the world isn't spinning around Amazon. A closed market usually works for a certain period of time. Did for AOL too.
Then it simply becomes obsolete because the open market offers more diversity or convenience for the customers. Sony learned its lessons after some major failures.

An we'll just have to wait and see if Amazon regards Mobipocket/prc to be either an asset or a burden in the long run.

Hmmmm... Legality (or not) of removing the DRM varies by locale. It also varies by legal opinion if you live in the US. That is, here in the US we have neither case law nor clear statute to tell us whether or not it is legal to remove the DRM! We have opinions -- ranging from clueless (much of the public) to semi-educated (much of the public, including me) to professional (actual lawyers) to truly expert (eminent legal scholars specializing in IP issues)... and there seem to be nearly as many opinions as opiners! We won't know what's actually legal until the courts sort it out or the congress steps in and provides clear statute to tell us.

I just pulled all my Mobipocket eBooks into Calibre. Great program, now I just have to find the time to update/add/correct the meta-data for the 700 eBooks where the metadata didn't import. In most cases even the title/author info didn't import even though both show up nicely on my Cybook and BeBook.

Oh Cr@p,

I've put all my books in Mobipocket format. I have only a couple DRM ones. I have a Cybook and BOUGHT it because it was a dedicated reader that uses Mobi. I HATE the PDF.

I'd have to learn how to make the other format. Aaarrrgh.

I hope this isn't true.

Don't do this manually - instead open a ticket on the Calibre web site. Or post in the Calibre forum first to see if this is a known issue with a work around. If the Cybook and BeBook can see the metadata then Calibre should read it too. The bug will probably be fixed quicker than you can enter the data anyway.

Note that very old PRC files don't have author info (but all should have the title). There is an option to use the filename to specify the author and title - which only helps if you have a "system" for filenames but if you do Calibre can take advantage of it as its last resort when importing.

ePub added to Fictionwise MultiFormat option—plus, 50 percent off on all MultiFormat titles

Teleread is reporting on Fictionwise's ePub and Bookeen's ePub for the Gen3.

According to a french site which has contacted Bookeen (http://www.actualitte.com/actualite/...pport-Sony.htm),
the firmware with the EPUB support announced for today in the Weltbild Cybook Gen3 is a Release Candidate firmware, for Weltbild only, to allow them to compete right now with Sony.
The final Firmware update should come in a few weeks.

So we could imagine that Booken having to provide E-Pub support on April 30 and no later for Weltbild could have decided to focus on this customer first and release a firmware on time but without all the features (eg. Mobipocket suppport), and this could have delayed the final firmware version release...
