Added 300+ books from my Kindle library. Took calibre about 1m 5s to finish sync. This also doesn't seem to be problematic.

It looks like the performance issues involve side-loaded books. That will be subject of my next experiment.

Added about 250 side loaded books. I'm still not seeing any significant performance issues when calibre connects and syncs. It just takes a minute or so.

For me, the solution was to remove the Android File Transfer app from the login items list in the MacOS settings, first (step 0: make sure that the app isn't running). Then, to launch the Calibre app, and only after that to connect my kindle.
