I search on Dumas and I find 50 results. If you want to narrow it down to a specific format you can specify the sub-forum in e-books uploads section. BOb |

As you're on a Kindle, you need Mobipocket format ebooks.
So - go to Ebooks/Mobipocket (MOBI) Then there's a Search E-Books menu on the right hand side of the E-Book Uploads heading. But since you know the authors you're interested in, you might be better off using the alphabetic index. There's lots of Conan Doyle and Dumas. e.g. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10153 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28082 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28085 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28087 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28089 |

Pilotbob and PDCurrant,
Many thanks for the info. It was the little Search box that I was missing. Now that you've helped me find it, things start falling into place. (That said, I've decided to go with the "huge collection" for now. I'll put my reasons for that in separate post.) |

Thanks again for all those who replied. I decided to start with the classic crime collection, and am reasonably happy with it.
For the benefit of any others who might take the same route, here are my thoughts:
On balance, I like the idea of buying these big collections, and will probably go for some of the others in due course. |

If you are really into the classics try going to the Mobilereference site. They have deals to buy the collections in packets. The most expensive is $50 for 52 authors and all their works where amazon sells them one at a time at $5 each. Note Mobilereference sells the works at $6 each. Mobilereference also has a $30 packet. They also have no DRM if you get it from the site. You can also get all these works for free but it's set up as single books and not a collection of Works in a single file which is what I love about the way they do it. They take up less space on your ebook. I hate going through too many pages. Of course you can search on a title but again I still like having all HG Wells in one place.
Also mobireader has a site that sells this collection for $20 but I don't know if they have DRM or not. The thing to remember is that Mobilereference out-sources their collections to several ebook retellers. Last edited by pagansoul; 05-18-2009 at 08:01 AM. |

Pagansoul,
Thanks for that helpful advice. I hadn't been to the MobileReference site before. It looks much better organised than many of the ebook sites I've been browsing, and the selection is impressive. However, I'm confused about the formats. The site says that all their titles are comapitible with the Kindle (except a few encyclopedia), but when I tried to download some samples, it presented five different formats, none of which specifically referred to the Kindle. Do you happen to know which format I should download, or doesn't it make any differences? |

.prc or .mobi are the formats that work directly on the Kindle.

Pshrynk,
Yes, but the Mobile Reference site doesn't give you those choices. The choices are: Desktop/Notebook/Tablet PC, Pocket PC, Palm, SmartPhone, Symbian and BlackBerry. I don't recognise any of those as the Kindle. I'm also confused by the fact that, whichever of those formats you choose, it then takes you to a page to download software. Why do I need to download software if I just want the ebook? |

You want the Palm. That's really Mobipocket, which is what your Kindle reads.
The page with the download application button is lying. Enter your email, click the button, and you're taken to a page with a downloadlink to the sample file. Quote:

I believe using Blackberry gives you PRC or MOBI, whatever, they both work on the Kindle. Don't forget the mobireader site. There are also Mobilereference books there. Again, buying entire collections is a huge savings if you like the classic authors even more so when you just break down and get packets containing multi colections. I couldn't read Edgar Rice Burroughs any other way (Martian series, Tarzan series, Pellucidar series, Caspak series, Mucker series....).
In a lot of cases Amazon just takes Mobipocket freebooks and make them down-loadable to your Kindle. You will recognize the cover picture. They currently are having a sale 50% off the big collection packet. http://www.mobipocket.com/freebooks/default.aspx Last edited by pagansoul; 04-28-2009 at 02:44 PM. |

Thanks for that, Pagansoul. I'll keep it in mind. So far, I've managed reasonably well with the stuff I've obtained from the Kindle store, either for free or for a trivial amount. It'll keep me in reading matter for a few more weeks. After that, I'll look around.
