I guess the masks have more of a psychological effect. People wearing masks feel reassured. Perhaps because they know that the people around them are less likely to infect them if they are sick.

As for protection, it's proved that cleaning your hands regularly and avoiding to touch your visage, eyes, noses etc. with your hand when outside is more efficient.

I also really like the "I'm Immune" T-shirt. These are a must.

I have an already booked and paid for vacation in Cancun starting next week Friday. I'm going. It's a lot mor difficult to catch flu than they are saying on TV. Stay out of crowded places and wash your hands a lot.

Egypt has decided to cull the entire country's pigs/hogs, even though there is no evidence that the virus is being spread via pork products. Government says it is a precautionary step.

Given that Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country, I suspect that the number of pigs there is rather limited, anyway, so it's probably not a terribly drastic measure for them to take. Not like doing the same in a western European country, where there are huge numbers.

The local news radio stations said there are/were ~300,000 pigs in Egypt. For what that's worth.

This is obviously a serious thing for the elderly and those with compromized immune systems, but it's beyond me why the American media is panicking like this. This is more of a concern for those countries where adequate treatment for the flu isn't available.

Absolutely! I am heading to Mexico next week and intend to enjoy myself thoroughly. Especially since the crowds will be sparse now. It is very hard to catch flu in a hot muggy environment. Put 20M people together on a volcanic plateau and add some droplet spread contagion and you might get about a 1% infection rate. Which is what they got.
