I'm wondering if Kobo will release any meaningful software update along with the new devices. It's been a long time since the previous one, which makes me think that they have sent their entire engineering department to work on the new devices.

It looks like the new Libra will support the stylus, and I've seen a lot of people complaining about the note-taking feature not being good enough on their Elipsas and Sages (bugged / slow / drains the entire battery in 30 minutes etc). I'm wondering if Kobo has put any effort into improving this experience in the new Libra?

Bummed about this. I was hoping for an updated Sage (NOT COLOR) with better battery life and buttons.

Not sure what I’m going to do now to find a 8” with good clarity. (For Manga)

The link works just fine, the image link (cloud with the triangle/exclamation point) does not. This is because Tapatalk does not allow their image to be linked to by other web pages though if you use the URL tag, it does work when clicked on since that request originates from your browser.

As far as I recall, it was a few firmware updates back that converting the covers to dithered B&W before being loaded to the frame buffer started happening.

So, if I understand correctly, the colorizing is gone now (on the kobo device), whether you upload them in color or not. Right?

It’s a link. I added it because I wasn’t sure if the photo would post bc of Tapatalk. Why are you so ornery about stuff? How about answering the question? I’ll even rephrase it.

Does the color look better with a black Libra or a white one?

Update: Maybe I’m misreading your tone. I don’t mean to stir up contention.

Great questions. There was that questionare a few months back which focused a lot on cloud support, so that might be a premier feature for the color models that they want to keep a lid on.

I own a first gen Elipsa and note taking on it is truly slow & buggy. Quoth seems to have no issues with his Sage, though. At any rate, I liked the improvements they made with the Elipsa2E. Aside from color highlight support, I hope they fix syncing between devices. It’s still possible to create highlights in my Kobo app on my iPad that never show up on the Elipsa, and visa versa.

I don’t recall waiting a long while for an update before the Elipsa 2E was released, though. Maybe this wait is because they’re overhauling into 5.0 territory.

From my limited experience looking at a Kaleido 3 ereader, when it was out of it's cover, the black bezels seemed to make the background look lighter. When it was in it's white cover, the background looked darker. The owner finally purchased a black cover though we both knew it's more of an optical illusion than any real effect.

The problem is that this site doesn’t have a mobile version. The text shows as 5pt or smaller on my iPhone. (I’d show a screen shot, but you wouldn’t be able to see it bc of this same issue.) So anybody wanting an easier reading experience jumps at Tapatalk, but, as old cartographers once wrote, “here be dragons”.

I recall it working better when Tapatalk was first released, but once they picked up steam they made changes that worked for their app, but not for this site. At one point it would post monstrous images that I had no idea were a problem because Tapatalk auto resized. Even their smallest size is too large for this older site. I haven’t posted images in a while bc of these headaches.

What image hosting service do you use, David? What’s the most convenient one, and does it have a mobile app? Thanks.

Color theory is fascinating due to these optical effects. Although they are illusions, they are as our eye perceives, so picking the better color bezel will make a difference. It’s all subjective, however. I thought that surely a site that spawned months of heated arguments over USB-C would have opinions one way or the other on bezel colors.

Judging by the pictures, there is a difference, though it’s slight. The white tends to blend in with the gray of the eInk substrate, so the color stands out, at least in that picture compared to the black, which overpowers it. However, as the product shots show, the colors pop with black anyway with the backlight on and a dimmer background. That means that it really depends on the reading environment.

If I pick the Libra up, I think I’ll go with the white bezel since I’ve had black Kobos for centuries.

I've never owned a white bezel eink device but I did have a pearly ivory PocketBook360 over 10 years ago. These were the days before built-in lighting. Much as I liked this 5" device at the time (especially the clamshell cover), I did think the unlit eink screen looked a little bit "grubby" against the ivory bezel. I've stuck with black bezels ever since.

Here's an ancient video if you want to get an idea.

Looks a lot like the old Jetbook readers, though I think those were LCD.
