I am going to get it. I don't need it but that has never stopped me before... I just need to make sure the Kobo Libra 2 cover will fill the Kobo Libra Colour. It looks like the Clara 2E and Clara Colour covers are compatible, so here's hoping!

From everything I've seen on colored e-ink screens, the pastel colors are all they can do.

It is interesting - and a very good thing - that they're making repairability a key feature of the Libra Colour. The URL kobo.com/repairability just leads to their support login at the moment so the details are unclear, but this is potentially good news.

Stylus 2 sold separately, hence add to the costs.
Is the 7" Kaleido 3 screen any good? Color-wise (and money-wise seeing the suggested $250), I'm afraid I stick for the moment with my Nxtpaper 11" (and with my old trusty Libra 2 B/W). |

There are plenty of other Kaleido 3 devices to compare against. Not only does Kaleido have a much darker canvas because of the passive colour filter on top of the screen, so contrast is much lower than on a regular Carta 1200 panel, but the ghosting performance is also much worse. Onyx Boox has tried to address the terrible ghosting performance by adding a special GPU to perform image post processing. This approach works well, but it is terrible for battery life, and it doesn't fix the poor contrast. It's unlikely Kobo is going to use the GPU cleanup approach, so keep your expectations in check.

Eh I’ve got both a Sage and Libra 2, I don’t mind the pale color as it could be beneficial for highlighting if it impacts the contrast and readability of text it’s a hard pass.
Won’t be a preorder for me. But I’m not going to say absolutely not without seeing reviews |

Pastel colours or not, I'll certainly be ordering the Libra when it's available. I'm finding my Elipsa just too big for lugging around and a little splash of colour would be nice.

The only potential downside is that currently released Kaleido 3 devices are dimmer (due to the color layer) even if not utilizing the color, like reading a novel. You compensate with the light settings. It is always possible, but not probable, that Kobo found a way to address this. We will see. On my Boox device it is not a concern, again because I expected it (lots of prepurchase research) and I compensate with brightness. For Kobo fans it should be great if you need color for manga/graphic novels. Having said all that, there are some rumors, from a website that shall not be named and others, that Kindle will come out with a color device next year that uses a different technology than the Kaleido 3 which could take things to a new level. Again, time will tell. Last edited by TheSmitty; 04-04-2024 at 04:09 PM. Reason: clarification |

With the illumination on and at the usual reading distance I find it hard to find significant differences with a monochrome e-reader. Only extremely demanding users (and in this forum there seem to be quite a few) are going to notice that loss of contrast. I have monochrome e-readers with the best screens on the market and I prefer to read on my colour e-reader. While some will be disappointed, others will be pleasantly surprised. In my opinion it is worth giving colour e-readers a chance and let each user decide individually whether they are useful or not. And those who prefer a monochrome e-reader will continue to have that option.
Battery life depends on the characteristics of each individual device and how it is used. A Kobo Sage or a Kindle Oasis have a significantly shorter battery life than an Onyx Boox Tab Mini C. I imagine that Kobo will include a higher capacity battery in their colour e-readers. |

So half the resolution too. No-one selling colour LCD claims the mono panel resolution, so neither should Kaleido resellers. LCD is using a mono panel and a colour filter, but since it's back lit the extra loss in a saturated filter doesn't matter. Because eink uses reflected light the loss of light in the filter is doubled. Also the filter adds more reflectance so contrast is also reduced. This is a niche in a niche really only good for comics. Actual novels will be far better on the Libra 2 (which oddly does work with the pen, but has no notetaking software apart from sketch pad). I've used the reMarkable, Elipsa and Sage for notes. But the tablet with Gpad handwriting or Nebo is far better. I tested also on the eink Android and the experience was abysmal. I'm sure some people will be happy with this, but if your main reading is novels it's pointless. |
