I've had that happen. If I end up reading through multiple books without wanting to get back to the first one, I take that as a sign to seriously consider DNFing it.

Those book descriptions that go "perfect for fans of SomeAuthorYou'veNeverHeardOf, AnotherAuthorYou'veNeverHeardOf, and SomeAuthorWhoSoundsVaguelyFamiliar."

To me, I've usually heard of the authors. But if I wanted to read those authors, I'd be reading their books.

As a fan of horror, do you know how many times I have read the phrase "Reminiscent of early Stephen King..."?

They seem to slap on the name of any currently selling well or extremely famous author and you get the impression the copywriter in the Crayon Dept hasn't read either the current book or works by the referenced author. Very annoying to see "Bridgerton" referenced in blurb of not just any historical romance, but every book by some authors (including non-romance titles) dead before Julia Quinn (who wrote them) was born, or probably before Julia was out of junior school. Anyone I know that likes Historical Romances, written in the 20th C. or earlier, could not be paid to watch the Netflix drama series. Advertising wonks are a menace! [* I've never read Angela Carter, and ditched Wheatley 50+ years ago. Read some Lovecraft over the last few years out of curiosity] Last edited by Quoth; 03-19-2024 at 02:59 PM.

Wheatley I remember reading from the library as a teenager. I don't think I ever owned any.

Even better is when you do recognize the author and there actually isn't any similarity at all.
