Not sure if you want to sort by the number of books in the series or the series index. If the latter, simply sort on series then on authors. Sorting on series sorts series and series index. If the former, i.e. sort by number of books in the series, that is going to require quite a bit more work.

Or maybe Ctrl + F5 -> Sort on multiple columns? Then select Author and Series

(I have the Sort by button replicated on the right side of the search bar, so I've just looked up that shortcut) |

Be advised that you can not have sorts that are mutually exclusive.

Series automatically sorts in index order. BUT it that series has different Authors and then you Author sort Bzzt. ONE OR THE OTHER |

(the look may vary) Use ctrl-F5 to start: Sort on Multiple columns: <fill out form as desired> Comfy.n will have to explain how he created the button ![]() BTW There is a Tweak if you always want to start calibre with this sortCode:
	ID: sort_columns_at_startup
Provide a set of columns to be sorted on when calibre starts. The argument is None if saved sort history is to be used otherwise it is a list of column, order pairs. Column is the lookup/search name, found using the tooltip for the column Order is 0 for ascending, 1 for descending. For example, set it to [('authors',0),('title',0)] to sort by title within authors.

 - by default 'Show the Sort by menu' in Calibre is to be called with '⌘ + F5' command in macOS - but macOS has reserved this shortcut for 'VoiceOver' - so I've reassigned 'Show the Sort by menu' to '⌘ + S' and it works now w/out any conflict with macOS thanks very much P. S. however, I couldn't sort out the appropriate dedicated button

Like this: FWIW & IMO: it should be there by default, irrespective of being in grid or list view. And it should have a menu item for Re-apply current sort… afaik it can only accessed via a shortcut (F5 default), which seems inconsistent with calibre's UX design principles… a clickable something for everything.
