You need to keep your Kindle offline for a few weeks, at least, and then turn wifi on again. If you turn wifi on often, your sideloaded content won't get deleted.

Personally, I would think that any company worth their salt would take seriously users concerns that their data is being deleted from their devices, if that company did not intend to do that. Furthermore, there are many in this thread who report it happening to them. So the problem appears to be repeatable. And not all that rare. There are probably precious few places in Amazons Kindle software where the code actually deletes anything. It should be pretty straightforward for a software developer to be able to backtrack from those places and trace down a triggering event. This does not feel like a corruption issue where there was no coded "delete" operation in play. Everything on the Kindle appears fine from reports I have read - except for the deleted content. Those are not the footprints of a random corruption issue. So FWIW, even though "it's been suggested" that this is a bug, I am not in total agreement with that suggestion quite yet. My main reason being that it does not appear to be a bug by the way Amazon is treating it. They seem to be ignoring it. A bug that deletes user data? That's a heck of a thing to ignore, even for Amazon. This does not pass the smell test. From what people have reported in this thread, I think the deletion is intentional. That's just my theory. "Intentional" is not a synonym for "malicious". It could just be misguided logic. Or it could be just a stupid thing to do, that they didn't think through initially. |

What's the point of a Kindle for anyone who side-loads and uses WiFi? Nothing at all!

What's the financial benefit for greedy, evil Amazon in purposely deleting side-loaded books from the devices of the miniscule number of users who sideload books AND leave their WiFi off for large swathes of time? |

Was it that, or clock drift? Maybe try setting the clock on Kindle back (or forward) a couple of hours and see what happens.

It has to be a small percentage of 'sideloaders', who indeed are a small percentage of Kindle users or it would be in the mainstream media and no-one wants bad publicity. So it's a mistake / bug thing. It would work a bit better if deliberate. |

The browser (any browser on any eink) is ghastly. Even a phone or tablet that has OTG and a file manager is better to sideload downloads on any Mass Storage Mode ereader (never tested if an MTP device can mount). Wikipedia: Uses Browser. See above. So if you are sideloading ebooks there is no need to use the WiFi, ever. If you get all the ebooks via Amazon (inc using Send to Kindle elsewhere), you don't need USB. Also most people read Amazon ebooks on a Kindle App, so they will be using mobile-cell or WiFi. Last edited by Quoth; 02-04-2024 at 08:25 AM. |

I side-load and usually keep WiFi off. Also do manual updates. My mistake was joining Kindle Unlimited to download some content. One of the rare times I turned WiFi on. It didn’t turn out well.

Would waiting until next Sunday get books deleted from my PW3?
