Dialogues of the Dead is the eighteenth in Reginald Hill's Dalziel/Pascoe series. It's on sale for $1.99 right now in the US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q4PYQ94
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/dia...-of-the-dead-9

Spoiler:
Quote:
Normally, there would be nothing sinister about a death by drowning and a motorcycle fatality—had these tragic occurrences not been predicted before the fact in a pair of macabre "Dialogues" submitted to a Yorkshire short story competition. Yet the local police department is slow to act—until the arrival of a third Dialogue...and another corpse.

A darkness is settling over a terrorized community, brought on by a genius fiend who hides clues to his horrific acts in complex riddles and brilliant wordplay. Now two seasoned CID investigators, Peter Pascoe and "Fat Andy" Dalziel, are racing against a clock whose every tick signals more blood and outrage, caught in the twisted game of a diabolical killer who is turning their jurisdiction into a slaughterhouse.

The Way of the Bear is the eighth and most recent (2023) in Anne Hillerman's continuation of her father's (Tony Hillerman) excellent IMO Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series. It's on sale for $1.99 right now in the US. I've liked all of the continuation titles that I've read, and am looking forward to reading this one.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B71NTJZV
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-way-of-the-bear

Spoiler:
Quote:
Fossil harvesting, ancient lore, greed, rejected love and murder combine in this gripping new installment of New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman’s Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series.

An unexpected death on a lonely road outside of Utah’s Bears Ears National Monument raises questions for Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito. Why would a seasoned outdoorsman and well-known paleontologist freeze to death within walking distance of his car? A second death brings more turmoil. Who is the unidentified man killed during a home invasion where nothing much seems to have been taken? Why was he murdered?

The Bears Ears area, at the edge of the Navajo Nation, is celebrated for its abundance of early human habitation sites and the discovery of unique fossils which revolutionized the scientific view of how early animals dealt with their changing world. Chee and Manuelito appreciate the area’s scenery and wealth of human and scientific resources, but their visit to this achingly beautiful place is disrupted by a current of unprecedented violence that sweeps them both into danger. Illicit romance, a fossilized jawbone, hints of witchcraft, and a mysterious disappearance during a blizzard add to the peril.

It takes all of Manuelito’s and Chee’s experience, skill, and intuition to navigate the threats that arise and see justice served.

Michael McGarrity's Kevin Kerney books don't go on sale very often, and are pretty expensive when not on sale. Which is a shame, because I really liked a lot of the earlier books when I read them back in DTB days. So I'm happy to see Residue, which is the first of two series titles that McGarrity wrote after a hiatus of about a decade, go on sale for $2.99 in the US. And it's discountable at Kobo US!

And, I had a review copy of the second of the two "new" books (Head Wounds) a couple of years ago, which I quite enjoyed, so I'm happy to get a chance to read the first of the "new ones" now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BLKPQYV
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/res...-kerney-novels

Spoiler:

A long-unsolved missing person’s case becomes a homicide investigation when the bones of the girlfriend of now retired Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney are unearthed forty-five years after her disappearance. And he is now the main suspect.

Death at the Terminus is the 21st and most recent (2023) in Edward Marston's Railway Detective series, at least until a new one comes out next week. It's £0.99 right now in the UK, and it's discountable at Kobo...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BJ6Q88DX
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/dea...the-terminus-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
York, 1865. A passenger train stands ready to depart amid the bustle at the station. The flurry of passengers and porters, the swooping pigeons and barking dogs are thrown into a state of turmoil when an explosion rips through the brake van of the train, killing guard Jack Follis.

In response to a summons from the North Eastern Railway, Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming are sent to investigate. Was it an accident, deliberate vandalism or targeted murder? The longer the investigation goes on, the more complex it becomes.

With a dizzying array of suspects and motives, will the combined skills of the detectives be enough to identify and catch the culprit?

I've read a few of Garry Disher's mysteries in his Hirsch and Hal Challis series, and have liked the ones I read. But they rarely go on sale, so I'm happy to see Day's End, which is the fourth in the Hirsch series, drop to £2.49 at Kindle UK. That's still a bit more than I like to pay, but it is the most recent (2023) in the series, so better than if it were old backlist. Sadly, it's not on sale, at least as of now, at Kobo UK. I've included the link for price-check, though. And also not on sale in the US...

Quote:
WHEN HATE RUNS DEEP, THE INNOCENT SUFFER

Constable Paul Hirschausen's rural beat in the low hills of South Australia is wide. Daybreak to day's end, dirt roads and dust. Every problem that besets small towns and isolated properties, from unlicensed driving to arson.

But now, just as Hirsch has begun to feel he knows the fragile communities under his care, the isolation and fear of the pandemic have warped them into something angry and unrecognisable. Hirsch is seeing stresses heightened and social divisions cracking wide open. His own tolerance under strain; people getting close to the edge.

Today he's driving an international visitor around: Janne Van Sant, whose backpacker son went missing while the borders were closed. They're checking out his last photo site, his last employer. A feeling that the stories don't quite add up.

Then a call comes in: a roadside fire. Nothing much - a suitcase soaked in diesel and set alight - but two noteworthy facts emerge. Janne knows more than Hirsch about forensic evidence. And the body in the suitcase is not her son's.

From the multiple Ned Kelly Award-winning author of Consolation comes a stunning new thriller, for readers of Jane Harper, Ian Rankin and Chris Hammer.

The Daily Deal at Kindle US today seems to be the first in a whole bunch of series across a whole bunch of genres: mystery, romance, fantasy, westerns, and more. So if there's a series you've been wanting to try, here you go...

(I forgot to note the prices while doing the links, and am not going to go back and add them all, but most were $1.99 or $2.99 right now, maybe one or two at $0.99.)

A few mystery authors/series I've noted include:

Murder Must Advertise is about half-way through Dorothy L Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series. It's an Open Road book, so goes on sale a lot, but right now it's on sale for $0.99 in the US, which is unusually low even for Open Road, so I'm posting. (And it's discountable at Kobo US...)

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JVJHSS
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/mur...st-advertise-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
Lord Peter Wimsey goes undercover at an ad agency to find out who pitched a copywriter down a flight of stairs—“Delightful reading” (The New York Times).

The iron staircase at Pym’s Publicity is a deathtrap, and no one in the advertising agency is surprised when Victor Dean tumbles down it, cracking his skull along the way. Dean’s replacement arrives just a few days later—a green copywriter named Death Bredon. Though he displays a surprising talent for the business of selling margarine, alarm clocks, and nerve tonics, Bredon is not really there to write copy. In fact, he is really Lord Peter Wimsey, and he has come to Pym’s in search of the man who pushed Dean.

As he tries to navigate the cutthroat world of London advertising, Lord Peter uncovers a mystery that touches on catapults, cocaine, and cricket. But how does one uncover a murderer in a business where it pays to have no soul?

My favorite of the Wimsey novels. OK, the murder's farfetched, but the advertising agency setting is terrific.

Cozy Mystery Book Blast Jan 25th

https://cozymysterybookclub.com/bookblast/

From Lifehacker.com:
Quote:
Like Stuff Your Kindle Day, these types of events are not necessarily only for Kindle readers. Any type of e-reader will do. In fact, most of these can be read on your phone, laptop, or tablet. You can see the full list of e-books once the event starts, but for these kinds of events, it’s not rare to see some listed early and be left past the day of the event.

The free books are sorted into three categories: contemporary cozies, historical cozies, and paranormal cozies. The steps to getting the e-books are very similar to Stuff Your Kindle Day. You’ll see a short synopsis of the book and then a choice of how you want to download it.
I didn't know this was a "thing"... but you may find some interesting freebies, some of which are available for free already (today being Jan 23rd).

Just received a VIP 70% discount code on selected titles. If it's keyed to my email address, then forget it. And it might only work one time. I don't know, and I don't care.

If it does work for you, then please post that it's been used. -- I don't want to be bothered by frustrated individuals. And I presume you don't either, saying things like "Hey, this doesn't work!" or "Why didn't you tell us it's been used?" Or: "Hey, fool, why don't you give us another discount code!" And: "Can I have some money instead?" You get the idea. Right?

"Am I right, or am I right?" [Groundhog Day]

Hope it works for SOMEONE.

All the selected titles appear to be mysteries or thrillers. (I could be wrong.) I"m on a novella horror kick right now, and I have a ton of mysteries coming out of every orifice.

Rapture in Death is the fourth in JD Robb’s “In Death” series. It’s on sale in the US right now for $1.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OIZTAO
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rapture-in-death-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
They died with smiles on their faces. Three apparent suicides: a brilliant engineer, an infamous lawyer, and a controversial politician. Three strangers with nothing in common—and no obvious reasons for killing themselves. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas finds the deaths suspicious. And her instincts pay off when autopsies reveal small burns on the brains of the victims.

Was it a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder? Eve’s investigation turns to the provocative world of virtual reality games—where the same techniques used to create joy and desire can also prompt the mind to become the weapon of its own destruction...

Three of the six books in Andrea Carter's Inishowen series have just dropped to $0.99 each at Kindle US. I have read ARCs of a couple of the books in the series and, as I've mentioned before, the mysteries seemed a bit bleak, but were puzzling enough. However, I thought Carter's ability to convey a sense of the remote Inishowen peninsula was even better. And, the other three books in the series are only $1.99 right now, so if you like the series, you can scarf them all for less than $10.
