I'll take your word for it. The last tankōbon I purchased were the four translated Golgo-13 volumes released in the mid-eighties. From memory and the tankōbon I looked at while I was in Japan, they are about the size of the Libra. But I didn't have a Libra on hand to compare.

Quote:
The Sage is a 3:4 aspect... while tankōbon is 3:4.27 meaning that using the 1920 vertical pixels of the Sage would leave... a ~0.4 cm margin on each vertical side.
Yeah, I have the same problem with American comics. Anything where the page is essentially an image will result with empty space on the sizes or top and bottom unless you get very lucky in the aspect ratio.

At any rate, the 3:4 aspect ratio should work better for manga than the bulk of android tablets which tend to have 16:9/16:10 ratios.

The best luck I've had (with American comics) is with a Microsoft Surface and a Google Pixel Slate, both of which have an aspect ratio of 3:2. There are still margins, but they are very slim, and the margins change publisher to publisher.

I prefer reading manga on my Elipsa vs my 2E. Tankoubon are larger (23cm) than the Clara 2E (15cm) and they don’t have a DPI limitation, obviously. They’re more comfortable for reading manga than the Clara 2E (it feels too small and blurry). However, the Elipsa’s screen is 26cm, and although the eInk screen is a lower DPI than the Clara 2E, the added real estate makes for a beautiful manga display. Of course, my iPad is better yet, but I enjoy reading manga on the Elipsa over the iPad due to a lack of notifications and distractions. In that way, it’s closer to the tankoubon experience.

The Libra 2’s screen is nearly 18cm. That’s smaller than most of the tankoubon I have here. I used to have an Aura One LE. Its screen was almost 20cm, and I enjoy reading manga on the Elipsa more than I did the Aura One. The larger display makes for an excellent manga experience.

Why does Good eReader have a reputation for not being trust worthy? I've noticed this repeated ad nauseam on these boards, but never understood why.

A few things come to mind.

Multiple articles on the imminent release of the Kindle Voyage 2.

Multiple articles written by copy/pasting from messages on MobileRead without any credit to the original source.

Reviews of various ereaders filled with egregious errors and that often seem to have been written without having done anything more than unpacking the ereader (if they went that far).

Their recent article on the 2 upcoming Kobos raised a smile when it appeared to allude to MR posts as "from industry insiders"

Thank you, that helped. I have used my iPad too and it displays Manga really well. I worry a little about eye strain reading for long periods on a tablet screen as opposed to eink though, hence my desire for a larger ereader.

Also, when they sell something you are lucky if you actually get it.

Most of what I have read at Good eReader reads like it was either written by machine or badly translated by a machine. The text tends to be full of weird inaccuracies and non-sequiturs and just doesn't seem like it was created by humans.

For example: Their best of 2023 review describes the 7.8 inch screen of the Nook Glowlight 4 Plus as "large" but says the Kindle Papwerwhite Signature has a "larger 6.8 inch screen."

I just don't trust anything I read there.

One of their recent posts is about apparent financial troubles at Kobo, and says "Kobo plans on releasing two new e-readers sometime in the next couple of months."

Given that the NDA term for one of those filings expires in June or July, this seems unlikely. An example of sloppy research at the very least.

Anyway, I never expected another Voyage when PW3 came out. Still have a Pw3 but gave away the gen2 Oasis as it was pointless compared to having all of Libra, Libra2 (2x 7″), Sage 8″ and Elipsa 10.3″, which I still have.

Yes. Sloppy.

The idea of a bookshop and ereader didn't work for Sony, and probably isn't working for Barnes & Noble Nook.

Amazon doesn't need to make money at all from Kindle having of 90% of English ebooks worldwide and their markeplaces are tiny now compared to main revenue.

Google can't be making much from GooglePlayBooks, but doesn't matter. Ditto Apple and their (i)Books.

Onyx, Pocketbook, Meebook etc are niche and reMarkable is a niche in a niche (Digital Paper Tablet, not an ereader) and I wonder why they still exist.

It wasn't until reading this thread that I realised Good Ereader has a store. I stumbled across their craptacular reviews several times and found the quality so low I avoided visiting them. Knowing that they sell ereaders makes it all make sense. The zero-effort (possibly machine generated) text is just SEO filler created to draw people looking to buy to their store. Accuracy of the text doesn't matter, just volume.

I once bought a Nook from GoodeReader (B&N wouldn't sell it to me, as I'm not in the US). No complaints there - the device arrived when I expected it and had no issues. It was rather more expensive than at B&N, though.

Oh the pain!

To return to the thread's initial theme...

My "spare wheel" Libra 2 was stolen from my hotel bedroom. Is there any chance that a new 7" or 8" reader will be out before summer? Do I lug the Elipsa as a spare wheel whenever I go on holidays? Or do I buy another spare wheel Libra 2? I noticed that its price is lower than it was when I bought it: some 170€ instead of 190€; and I still have the cover (while the Sage's cover disappeared too, which I discovered yesterday night while packing. I don't know whether I or a stranger is responsible for that though).
And in the train, I realized I should have immediately changed my Kobo and Fnac passwords - done now I'm home, though I set parental control on the Sage while in the train just in case.

EDIT: found the Sage cover

There’s currently a sale on kobo.com with $20 off the Ellipsa, Sage and Libra 2. I’m really hoping this indicates they are trying to clear stock and will be announcing new ereaders soon.
