As soon as the union manages to get the figures from the university, we've lined up a team to go through them with a fine-toothed comb, then devise an alternative plan.
There's a public meeting on Monday, too. We're going to get some of our tutors to set up a Facebook site, twitter, and the online petition should be enabled by Monday. Our students are already asking what they can do to help, and have been wonderful.
patricia, that is excellent news. i'm so glad people have mobilised and you've gotten the attention of the media. please let me know if there's anything i can do to help.

Let's see... email list, blog, facebook, twitter, online petition... You could create a YouTube video with some great teaching moments and short interviews with some of the people whose jobs are at risk, and the students who will be cut off. If any of your students have enough talent in that direction to make a really funny video, it could take off and get a lot of attention for your cause. I'm not sure MeetUp would be relevant for you, though it might help to try using it to organize rallies around your area. Your blog will have an RSS feed, I presume...

We could make tshirts, buttons/badges, bumper stickers, etc. through the Ministry shop at cost if that would help get the word out.... "Oh! The Humanities!"
that's brilliant. and actually badges and stickers and t-shirts could be just the thing for rallies and such ; i think that's a very good idea. let me know if you want any help designing them.

Aside: I am increasingly frustrated with the "establishment" attitude towards (tertiary/on-going/adult) education. Which is in part why I left a teaching post. I always thought they were about finding out how to self-study, to learn how to think, discuss, reason and argue. Now the purpose is about providing a trained workforce that knows how to install widget X into device Z. And so it doesn't seen any point in wasting money in something without direct application.... <descends from soap box rant>

I'm glad you are getting organised; and wish the best for you. As I understand it, part of this will be for facts that should affect (to a lesser or greater extent) other institutions. Has the union (UCU?) tried talking to other establishments?

Had my MRI today. I kept falling asleep while they were doing it (I know, it's a rather noisy procedure, but I can fall asleep anywhere and any time). Unfortunately, when I fell asleep, my fingers started twitching, which screwed up the scan. They had to do it five times.

Right now, I'm sort of working and resting in bed. I'm still working 12 hour days on the lawsuit. However, it will all be worth it in the end.

I've gotten dozy during MRI procedures myself.

So... what kind of outcome are you looking for with the Evil Developer, or should I not ask that in public? I don't think a civil suit will allow you to order the ED buried up to his neck in sand and offered to stray animals to mark territory on.

currently I am having a porridge of quinoa and honey. in a little while the pup and I will be off to participate in an open house for kids activities where we talk about a program called "Hug A Tree", which teaches kids how not to get lost, and then what to do if they do become lost.

I'm asking for $7,500,000 in damages. And, no .... sadly, I can't ask the judge to have him buried up to his neck in sand, or to have honey poured on him and leave him for the fire ants. Although, that would be nice.

However, I can't say much of anything anymore. It turns out that Evil Developer's minions have been following me on several forums, as well as Twitter, and reporting everything I say right back to him and his attorneys.

So, I have to be MUCH more circumspect about what I post from here on out. No more wild celebrations when I find some choice bit of evidence that his attorneys will freak when they see. Too bad, so sad.

Ah well, Ricky. Just turn up to let us know that you are well, and quietly say "heh, heh, heh!" in tones of quiet satisfaction. That should get them worried.

Damn, that's sad I didn't know. May she rest in peace and may her amazing voice charm others on the other side (if there is another side)
