ok, back to real vents & rants...

the backstory;

we have some properties that are off off OFF site and it is expedient to have civilian telecommunications service them. this one "coordinator" is apparently notorious for calling in more or less ficticious issues, then the civilian phone company gets called, we have to coordinate and every one shows up with 13 times out of 14 there being no issue (this is one of the things I am supposed to put and end to). this morning, (I had kinda' an icky tummy yesterday and stayed home) I got this in my email;

We are having problems with the following listed telephones here at XXXX xxx Dr. (oooo)

1. Name: Sxxx Wxxx

2. Telephone number:xxx-xxxx

3. Room location and position:xxA

4. Data port numberV xx

1. Name: Kxx Dxx

2. Telephone number:xxx-xxxx

3. Room location and position:MVxx, Cubicle x

4. Data port numberataport xx-x

1. Name: Txx Hxx

2. Telephone number: xxx-xxxx

3. Room location and position: MV-xx, C

4. Data port number: x-x, V

POC: Mr. so-n-so

I then CALLED the users he listed, told thme their phones had been reported out and asked if I could help. as you can see, 2 of the 3 were very surprised that the instrument (that we were talking on) was supposed to be out. my return letter follows;

Mr. so-n-so

I just contacted Sxx and Kxx, and left a message for Txx. The first two were completely unaware of any issues with their telephones and indicated that they had not reported any problems with them.

I certainly admire your industriousness in attempting to repair your co-workers phones prior to any problems occurring with them, but I beg your indulgence in allowing these phones to become disabled on their own so we can correctly diagnose the problem. Pro-active maintenance is an admirable lofty goal, but as a very small telecommunications detachment faced with the normal burdens of power outages and individual and unit training commitments, I am certain you can commiserate with me the over commitment of the time and talents of our personnel.

Have an incredibly nice and productive day!

ha ! excellent letter krisk. can i call you the next time i have to write to an idiotic bureaucracy ? i recently had to send in a photocopy of my latest electricity bill to prove that i had not, in fact, moved, because some unnamed administrator had sent me a letter which the post office had failed to deliver (ok. my street is only 3 buildings long. maybe it's a new postman and he hasn't hasn't heard of it. but i have been living at the same address for 10 years. you'd think they'd have figured it out by now. ), and from that bit of information had deduced that i had moved / died / been sucked into an alternate dimension. therefore my whole file was in statis, although i have not, in fact, moved, and therefore nothing has actually changed. i don't see why they couldn't just take my word for that over the telephone, for god's sake. that seems like an excess of zeal to me. oh, and by the way, i only found out about this by accident when i was checking my account online and saw the worrying message. they didn't actually try to email me (they have my email) or call me (they have my phone number).

Perhaps someone of krisk's acquaintance contacted them to tell them that your email and phone were out of service?

Rant: Why, in the name of all that is written, does it take so long to shut windows down? Heading back home after a day spent arguing with the machine about what software needed to be installed on it so I could do something, I'd eventually got it going, just as my lift wanted to head off. Great timing, for once!

Okay. So I just needed to shut down two applications, IE, and windows. Fifteen minutes later and I was still staring at assorted hourglasses. The disk wasn't busy, the network wasn't doing anything, the CPU was barely busy.... How difficult can it be to do a shutdown? Argggh!

(And yes, I know I could have held the power in for 10secs to force a shutdown, but I really didn't want to risk trashing some silly cached windows state and lose a few hours system config work -- lesson of experience.)

Grumble, grumble, takes swig of Talisker.

I'll have to watch it at home. no peecsure shows at work for me!

my ex is at Microsoft, and he said the only way anyone could get a perfect rating was to be the equivalent of the fireman that stops the fire BEFORE it even thinks about starting. that kept going through my head when I made those calls to the working phones.

But wouldn't that fireman then have to convince everyone that there was "going to be" a fire that he prevented. Sounds like a catch 22 to me.

DAMMIT! It's bricked if the only thing on my 505 is in a file called "protected!!!" and it says "firmware update did not complete successfully, please try again" and it won't power off, right?

And I don't have a wall charger and too tired for a trip to Target. DAMMIT!

Plugging into the wall tomorrow should fix it, right? Please?

EDIT: 3 hrs later, it's no longer a brick. YAY!!
