New Kobo coming? Which?

A new 7.8" device would be nice, lets hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot by putting in a tiny battery or a hopelessly slow CPU...

I don't think they are for ereaders. They are aiming at retail displays.
Kaleido is a niche and abysmal for novels. It's only good for comics and needs the front light on. Also Kaleido true resolution is half a regular mono panel resolution, fine for comics and poor for novels.

Eink itself is a niche with over half of ebooks read on phone apps.
Gallery colour is a different principle and only for retail display due to 1.5 second refresh!
Three supermarket chains here recently changed to eink 'two colour price tags' and one has larger panels.

I'd not mind an extra model either, but I'd mind very much if they concentrated most of their efforts on that and made it their flagship model. No way. Current color eink is nowhere near good enough yet.

The Good ereader article I mentioned a day or so back claimed that the writer had spoken with Kobo and been told they were of the same opinion as you about color e-ink and thus the new models would not be color.

I may be wrong, but I think Kobo only bought the right to sell Tolino devices before. The book markets, themselves, remained in the same hands of whoever owned them before. Deutsche Telekom had been in charge of the devices. It looks like Deutsche Telekom also ran the platform, but I thought that was basically done independently by various bookstores. (I guess the platform and bookstores are not the same thing.)

That is for the hardware production and their software backend. When Tolino was formed, those things were provided by T-Systems (Deutsche Telekom). Tolino as a brand is largely owned by Thalia.

Agreed.

Only Gallery 3 (which doesn't work like mono eink with colour filter like Triton or Kaleido) is anything like proper colour (and still poor) but it would need to do a full page refresh about x10 faster to be remotely a suitable technology for an ereader. The Eink Company doesn't adequately explain how it works for me to have an opinion on if it would ever be much faster.
An eink mono panel with a coloured filter (Triton, Kaleido) is never going to be be much better due to physics and mathematics, it's impossible. Kaleido applies every known trick to improve on Triton (2 x 2 cell vs 3:1 stripes and pastel shades rather than saturated RGB to brighten it).
