AI companies have all kinds of arguments against paying for copyrighted content

Alas, I don't see "we're cheapskates" which is probably closest to the true reason.

It has always been this way. When gutenberg came up with the printing press, his system borrowed stuff from the previous medium, scrolls, et cetera. And eBooks borrow from printed books. The newer media tend to *borrow from*, *augment* and *extend* the older media.

From scrolls -> books, the process was sort of manual and painstaking and it took a long time for the valuable things to transform into the new medium.

If there is no good way to reuse whatever humanity has built up already, I'd imagine it quite difficult to invent and work on new media.

I once contemplated this--as a concept, not something for myself, let's be serious--but the reality is the drive for reproduction is sorta what keeps the entire race moving forward.

Is it, sadly, the "why" of "why am I here?" People don't want to think that of course. That is nearly an existential crisis on the hoof.

They want to think that they matter, that they will contribute great poetry to the world or some silliness like that, but really...we're no different than the rest of the animals...our "purpose" is to procreate and die.

Nope, but for the wimmenfolks, aging is most definitely--most definitely--tied to the former far more definitely than it is to men. Good ol' mother nature can't tell when a male has been successful in his seed-spreading endeavors--only that he made the attempt. With females, though, she knows pretty definitively and once that task is done, she doesn't care if you straight to hell.

From an survival of the species perspective, a mother's 'task' isn't done until she's done her bit to ensure that grandchildren exist and are being reasonably well raised.

Or at least that is the prevailing theory as to why we women stop being able to reproduce well before the end of our natural lifespan.

Screw the "when you stop reproducing" bit. The aging bit is the cruel part. I mean, it's like Mother Nature flips a damn switch.

It's the old BS about how men retain their looks, yadda but women don't and as nasty as it is, it's bloody true.

I tend to wonder how much use the following will be that I've seen in a couple of books recently. One of the author's comment in response to an email query was that they have found evidence that several of their books have been used by AI projects without permission or payment.
