Error when trying to download metadata

Greetings,
When I try to 'Download metadata' under the Edit Metadata screen on both Calibre 7.0 and 7.1, I receive an error message stating no matches found. However, when I revert back to 6.29, I have no issues downloading metadata for the same book. I would appreciate any help with this issue.

You are presumably on an older Linux system, there is an incompatibility in OpenSSL in the calibre binaries and some older linux systems, stick with calibre 6.x nutil you are in a position to update your Linux.

Hi, I am sorry to report the same issue, running fresh Linux distribution and both latest Calibre versions.

Calibre versions tested:
7.0 and 7.1

Linux distros:
Fedora 38 and Fedora 39.

Thanks to this issue, I was gently pushed into the Fedora upgrade. I did the upgrade manually, following every step including removal of the obsolete packages and update of the configuration files.

How to reproduce:
Edit the book -> Download metadata -> popup window "ERROR: No matches found".

Then its likely something fedora specific. Someday I'll find the time to create a fedora vm to investigate but it wont be anytime soon. Stick with calibre 6.29 in the meantime.

The 6.29 version works just fine. Installed via:

Let's see, here we have fucking Fedora monkeypatching upstream OpenSSL in a way that means that upstream OpenSSL cannot even *read* the config they have /etc/ssl. They didnt even have the fucking decency to change their monkeypatched OpenSSL to read their incompatible config from someplace other than the default upstream location. Basic fucking decency. Incompetent baboons.

If calibre did not come with its own dependencies, the absolute shitshow that is Linux and its million incompatible pointless distros would not work AT ALL.

And I am fast approaching the the point where I am just going to stop supporting Linux all together. It's not worth the hassle. Linux and its twelve users generate more problems than the other several million users put together. So tell me some more about how this is calibre's fault, PLEASE.

About abandoning support for Linux, it hurts me to hear it.
Don't get like that Kovid, you have been doing a good job of making a program work on three operating systems for years and it was born when you were using Linux.
If you had to choose a Linux distribution, wouldn't it be easier to keep Caliber running for Linux?

I am surprised he lasted this long, trying to keep it working when every Tom & Harry think their (poorly tested) version is best. Just look at the issues with QT. Why so many changes that are not backwards compatible?

I understand the various branches of Linux. And it is not my intention that they choose my Linux distribution.
But Kovid assumes that it is established that calibre is developed for a Linux based on Debian,Ubuntu or Arch.
I use Linux (I'm not going to say which one, I don't have problems with Calibre)
If we analyze there are also some problems in both MacOS and Windows.
And I must be grateful that a solution to problems is always found.
