Oh--it must be the introduction to S&S, not the book itself. Thanks.
I hope you enjoy it! I'm a big Austen fan. |

Just bought the Jetbook
I just picked up the Jetbook at a BB&B in Fremont California. Of the zillions of BB&B in the SF bay area this is the only one which carries the devices. I actually had to tell them they had it, and they brought one out from the back with the demo model also.
I also have a Sony 500 Reader and the Jetbook is much faster changing pages and accessing menus. It also has a great zoom feature and allows changing from portrait view to landscape with a tap of a button on the front of the device. The print is much clearer than the Sony and the page find and word search is very simple to use. By the way I paid $200.00 with the 20% off coupon and the software is the up-to-date version. I don't like Fry's so I did not bother with them even though there is one in Fremont! |

I wonder how long that info's been there. I forgot to look. Just want to point out that the jetBook is a non-refundable item at Newegg. Return it in 30 days for exchange only. Can't say that I fault them for it. I have found them to be top notch when I purchased items from them.

I'm glad that you like jetBook! It has 5" screen and many nice features so I have it with me in my pocket for all my trips. Sometimes I spend 2-3 hours in airports and I keep jetBook loaded with my favorite books so I really enjoy reading it. I like hold Jetbook in left hand, read in landscape mode and use my left hand thumb finger to press page down button ![]() |

Like Kris777 says, it's pretty nifty. You have your choice between T9 input, or a what I find to be very cumbersome alternative method. It is not multi tap, where you just push the same key till your proper letter appears. Wish it was. You press the number on the right vertical keyboard corresponding to the letter you want, and then a scrollable window pops up with each letter assigned a number. You can either scroll down the list using the D pad arrows and then hit OK, or press the corresponding number beside your letter. The first (usually 3) letters in the window are CAPS, followed by lower case, then finally the number. Looks just like this if you push #4, which has the letters GHI. [1] G [2] H [3] I [4] g So now if you want a cap H you now push #2. After realizing this, I thought if I wanted a lower case h, next in the list if you scroll down, I would skip scrolling and just hit #5. But it doesn't work that way and won't let you. You MUST scroll down, only to find this: [1] h [2] i [3] 4 These letters have been assigned the same numbers, and now pressing #2 gives you a lower case i in your search field. Unless I completely missed something, this is quite tedious. The good news is that T9 input works quite well. "Tedious" takes just 4 pushes on 3 keys (TEDI, that's 8334 on keypad) until it appears in the box, and two quick pushes of the OK button, the first to enter your word in the search field, and the second to initiate the search, brings up split second results. To initiate a search in any book, just hit #4 on the vertical keypad. The dictionary (Your Sony doesn't have that either does it? ![]() The thought occurred to me that the vertical keypad could be used to instantly scroll to a line, but no. I'm using the English dictionary, and unlike my Mac dictionary, it has trouble with foreign words. Portmanteau, quickly defined by my Mac as a two sided suitcase, brought up the definition for "portrait" on the jetBook. This is while using the English version of "The Invisible Man" as an example. EDIT: Search still works in dedrm'd books. It also works with a pdf>epub conversion I made using Calibre. It becomes #3 on keypad instead of #4, because the dictionary does not function in any of the books I have dedrm'd, or with converted pdf's, and no longer appears as option #1 in settings. The jetBook doesn't allow a random lookup of a word either, unlike the Kindle. Last edited by galavanter; 04-23-2009 at 12:48 AM. |

The jetBook manual clearly states that Settings>User Settings will take you to these settings in this order:
Languages Auto Power Off Auto Turn Page Volume Dictionaries Fonts I have them all but Dictionaries. I still can access the dictionaries, hidden though they are, and select them via the menu button when reading a (preloaded) book, but I am wondering if the new update changed this or if something disappeared, or was accidentally deleted from my User Settings. I am also wondering if this is related to the nonfunctioning dictionary I mentioned at the end of my prior post, when reading dedrm'd books. Would dedrming a file disable the dictionary function like that? EDIT: I just downloaded Notes from the Underground.epub and Crime and Punishment.mobi from gutenberg and my jetBook dictionary doesn't appear as a menu option with either. Will someone please help me confirm the problem? Last edited by galavanter; 04-23-2009 at 05:42 AM. |

Now don't get me wrong. I'm digging my jetBook still. Who wouldn't love a company this creative:
http://www.jetbook.net/images/toons/jetBook_Eng.swf If that doesn't make you lust for a jetBook, take a look at Ectaco.com's front page: http://www.ectaco.com/ ![]() I guess I was taken in by the above, and now here I sit, reading the preloaded NY state driver's manual on my jetBook, listening to the preloaded background music, which sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks covering a Philip Glass composition. That is until (thankfully) it shuts off after a minute or two. It's just that I'm feeling a little bamboozled at the moment. You see I spent quit a few hours trying to figure this out, finally reinstalling the software, only to find that it had been properly installed in the first place. My issue with the dictionary apparently is really an issue with Ectaco's claims. See below (scroll down a bit) for the dictionary support claim: http://www.jetbook.net/comparison.php English-English it says, just like it says for my Kindle. Only my Kindle looks up words in books. That is what I thought Ectaco meant. I guess they meant only in text and fb2 files, because after loading epub, mobi, prc, and rtf files, I discovered that the dictionary support isn't there for those types. Now it's not really a deal breaker, and maybe there is another explanation. It's always possible I am missing something here, just as my jetBook is missing the supposedly included Fodor's Travel Guide. After all, I am new to the ebook world. Well see what response I get from the Ectaco forum. So let me get back to the driver's manual. I can't wait to see how it ends. I guess I can always exchange the jetBook at BB&B for a Sonicare toothbrush and some bamboo sheets. Last edited by galavanter; 04-23-2009 at 11:42 AM. |

yes, the animation is nice. But it's misleading. What it says to me is I can take books out from my public library to read with the Jetbook. Well my public library has ePub, Mobipocket, and PDF eBooks and guess what? Not a single one of the them will work as is with a Jetbook. And do you know why? Sure you do. Etaco decided that DRm is not a good idea to have on the Jetbook but they refuse to tell you this. So you go and buy a Jetbook and try to read some of those nice library eBooks and what happens? You cannot. This is just another misleading bit of advertising from Etaco. World renown for lying to it's customers.

Jon never in my wildest dreams did I think you would be the first to reply to my post. How about a little rant about the lack of dictionary support? That's my beef. The rest I knew going in. All my Kindle books are on the jetBook. Tell us something we don't know already. How's your mom?

I think I'm about sold, now I just hope the deceptive adds that JSWolf talks about doesn't tank the company. I'd like them to be in business for a good long time! Last edited by wodin; 04-23-2009 at 02:02 PM. |

Well, I dropped the hammer on a Graphite JetBook at Newegg. Now I'm in that absolutely agonizing mode of “IS IT HERE YET? I WANT IT NOW!!!”
![]() After all, they have my money, why can't I have my Jetbook now? |
