At the moment I’m well into City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It was originally conceived as a stand-alone but is now the first in a new series “The Tyrant Philosophers”. The world Tchaikovsky creates is remarkable with an astonishing variety of characters.

Currently reading Peter Mansbridge's memoir Off the Record. An interesting person who has seen Canada, and its politics and personages, from Coast to Coast to Coast since the 60's. The book is lots of little chapters each focusing on a person or event. Of primary interest, certainly, to those of us who watched "The National" (prime time national newscast from Canada's public broadcaster, the CBC) for many years, but also for the perspective of a person who watched, and reported on, the world for more than 50 years, 30+ of them as the anchor and chief correspondent of The National.

Currently reading Murder After Christmas by Rupert Latimer. A very light-hearted murder mystery that's generated plenty of wry chuckles. And earned the distinction of being the first book that I can recall having read to feature the word "Procureuse" - DEFINITELY the first book I've ever read to feature the phrase "a sort of Heavenly Proceureuse"

Which was the expected good story by Dick Francis.
Then I read an impluse buy. Skandar and the Unicorn Thief by A. F. Steadman. 3/5 and a low 3 at that. And then The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. Excellent epic fantasy. Next up: Mrs Pargeter's Pound of Flesh by Simon Brett. So far the expected cosy murder mystery. |

I just finished Our Woman in Moscow by Beatriz Williams. It was just ok. Two sisters stories on different timelines eventually merging to the same timeline. Ones sister's story was a real snoozer. The others was ok. I pressed through. I wish I hadn't.
I'm at a loss for what to read now. Even though I have some TBR books in the cue. |

Despite being well-written, I found this boring. Too much filler material to set up the next book. I couldn't feel the MC's anguish and pain and being this was the majority of the book, it fell flat. Rated C [3 stars].

Finished Swordcatcher by Cassandra Clare, the first book in a new series (and new universe, at least to me). Enjoyable and looking forward to the next one.

Currently reading Borrowed Words: A History of Loanwords in English by Philip Durkin, nonfiction book 25/36 for my goal. Not the popsci light linguistics read I was expecting, it's much more serious and academic, but still well-presented and engaging so far, thankfully.

I'll be curious what you think of it. I'm constantly going back and forth on what I think about this series. The interminable references to "the nameless" and the religion around them gets annoying. But if I skip over all of that (and I do), I quite like the rest of the books. (Currently doing a re-read of the series, just about to start Antiagon Fire)

Next I read Some of the Best of Tor.com 2012, which as a good collection of short SF and Fantasy, although the formatting was a bit poor - wrong title pages in some places. Probably fixed by now if I re-downloaded. And now I'm on to The Hope that Kills by Ed James. A police procedural. A freebie I got back in 2016. |
