I should have mentioned that I don't use ms windows or any file manager and have no icons to right click on..

I live in xterm windows and type the command name, any non default options, and the name of the file that I want to work on. I am an extremely slow hunt and peck typist, but this is what has worked best for me.

I've played with Linux for some time in the past, but ended up sticking to Windows, unfortunately. I guess the main reason is that some programs I find essential don't have a Linux version (e.g. PDF Xchange Editor/ Viewer). Also, at the time I considered OS migrating, I found the available GUIs somewhat slow to operate.

Linux is for folks who have some IT knowledge. Ordinary users like me with no IT background whatsoever and zero knowledge about terminals/command language/everything else as esoteric, are better off with Windows. Every time I have a problem, I google and usually find some instructions lay people can understand and follow; with Linux I would get lots of technical jargon I understand no more than Chinese.

I just raised my geek rating.

I am now running IBM MVS 3.8.

Yes, I now have my own personal IBM Mainframe (in software)!

I mostly object to Linux scripts that are too clever by half.
If you have to spend five minutes just to decypher what a script line is doing...

And don't get me going on chain functions.
Code:
apples().berries().camels().dogs().egrets()
How is it clear to the user that apples returns a UTF16 string, berries a file descriptor, camels a big JSON string, dogs an SQL query and egrets a cursor handle?

As to the rest, I didn't expect so much support. I was preparing to put my asbestos thermal on.

Careful it doesn't morph into a Z16 running Z/OS. If it happens to do so, open the cabinet where you'll find a diagnostics console running Embedded Windows XP

I'm not kidding. The ultimate expression of IIABDFI

As a Linux user, not totally disagreeing, I wouldn't want my folks using Ubuntu or Fedora or whatnot, but on the other hand, ChromeOS is about the simplest and most resiliant OS there is, and it's Linux based, so these generalizations are a bit off the mark.

That'd be like using a Telstra Y as shopping trolley. All I want is a checkbox in Taskbar settings labelled "Put the damn Recycle Bin on the bloody Taskbar", which if checked results in this:

I know how to kludge it, but one only has to look the kludge sideways and it either combines with the Explorer button, disappears behind the arras, or references something other than the recycle bin.

Had a ride in a mate's new Tesla Y then other day, nice… but by his own own admission far too complex… there are buttons in the boot (trunk) whose function even the dealer's mechanic didn't know of. I suggested something to do with install a new battery pack.

You can make a shortcut "D:\Program Files\DropIt\DropIt.exe" -DeleteSomething and then drag things onto it.

No I jumped from a ship to a speedboat. Where if you don't know what you are doing you'll come a cropper.

That said, some of the Linux distros supposedly hold you hand. As I don't need my hand holding I don't know how good they are as I have never tried them.
