I once theorized that using VHD could let you safely use Calibre in cloud storage. The trick is the container holding the library is being synced, not the library itself, which would (hopefully) avoid sync collisions and other issues such as GDrive breaking things by renaming the folders.

The disadvantages are a) you'd have to mount and dismount every time to use it, and b) you'd have to sync the entire VHD every time, no matter how many changes were made.

As far as I know nobody's actually tried it, so this is all educated guesses on my part.

Remember if you do use a sync tool:
Set it to MIRROR only. 2-way sync can really make a mess of your library

I would like a plug in that would automatically count the chapters of a book and show it in the column. If you are downloading Fanfiction it will also automatically update the number of chapters as well. This way you do not need to update the chapter numbers yourself.

There's the lovely "Modify ePub" plugin that permits (among other things) re-encoding the HTML in UTF-8. This error (or a lack of UTF-8 declaration) seems to be the only issue I encounter when sending my ePubs to my Kindle (via Amazon's webpage). It's a rare issue but, when I do encounter it, "Modify ePub" permits me to fix it.

The above being said, my idea for a plugin is simply a check to verify that the UTF-8 declaration (or encoding) is "true". If it is, nothing needs to be done (just tell me) but, if it's not, just let me know and I'll use the Modify ePub plugin to fix it. This will save me the steps of uploading a "bad" ePub that I need to delete, fix, and re-upload.

Thank you!

What defines a 'chapter'?
Not all books use the same method (per file) or even have a TOC entry.

Then there are humongous chapters (>30 pages) and those with 1/2 a page.

If it's not in the Quality Check plugin, perhaps it could be added.

How about an Action chain that runs Modify EPUB before running the Send to Amazon.

I've long wanted something to count TOC entries, especially for PDF files, but epub could work too. Counting files would be nice too sometimes. Either of those could substitute for chapter count.

Maybe count top level headlines in the TOC? or count headlines in the files too?

sounds very interesting, I believe this would solve an issue I had in the past, when I needed to filter e-books without a TOC on a given library:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=340633

if there was such a column, one could search for #toc_headings:#=0 or #toc_headings:#<2...

edit: Actually the search can be simply #toc_nodes:0 or #toc_nodes:<2, with the new Chain

Try to remember that most of the calibre plugins were written by someone who wanted to perform specific actions on their calibre library.

Yes, that's exactly what I want it for. I have a lot of books that do have a TOC, but it only has one entry...so it doesn't really have a TOC. And I'm thinking of extracting from PDF files not just TOC info but number of pages and whatever other metadata I can find.

Extracting toc info from epubs would have to be in a separate plugin I think.

Yes, and I've been thinking about writing it for more than a year. I'm sure I've got a pile of round tuits in a corner somewhere. Maybe some crumbs.

basically the chapter idea I was thinking of would look at something like the epub or the file that is to be read and look at the table of contents side and then count the chapters and then place the total chapters in the column and maybe also in the bottom section in the data below with the metadata. That was what I was thinking. It would automatically read it without opening the file. If the file is updated it would update the number of chapters automatically as well (such as fanfiction or other documents)

As I see the issue I see with counting ToC entries is that there's lots of non-ToC entries.

Okay then, you say, just count the actual entries that have numbers—except some ToCs don't bother with numbers, and sometimes there are numbers but also an unnumbered prologue/epilogue.

Personally, I do it manually - copy ToC (ebook-viewer lets you do this) to a text editor, remove unwanted lines, check number of lines.

Read without opening the file??? If the TOC is inside, then how?

Opening and Viewing are different. The latter need to Render from the code.

I think they mean copying the ToC to a column? I'm not sure, its hard for me to read.

Hmmm.... How are you planning on reading the file without opening it. Do you mean without opening it in a viewer? As for doing this automatically? If/when the plugin is created, hopefully it will work with Action Chains.
