Just finished up for this week with sorting things in the house with my parents. This week we tackled the upstairs front room aka the you-never-know-if-it-comes-in-handy room aka the dumping ground of four generations of crap. There's still a big shelving system with containers with tools my father has to sort. A lot of what we went through can stay, some things will be donated, my parents will keep some stuff and I will take a couple of things.
There's a Singer sewing table I had already claimed years ago. I also found a rush stool I like, it's a bit wobbly and needs new rush but I think it can get fixed. I also found the old Olivetti calculator (similar to this one, but a lot dustier), it was once used by the secretary of our business and later I played with it. Yesterday we found a typewriter from 1897, like this one, we still have the wooden board it was mounted on, but it's bagged up because it has woodworm. I'll have to see if I can get it restored somewhere, since it's very rusty. It was most likely owned by my mother's father or her grandfather even. It's good that this week I also, finally, arranged for a big storage locker. My sister will help me get the sewing table and a couple of other heavy things downstairs, hopefully my father has time to take it to the storage facility on Monday. |

Last week my sister and I went to look at two houses. The first in Gouda, which was a really nice house, but needed quite a bit of work because the finishing wasn't that good (inside woodwork like window frames needed to be painted, a lot of walls needed stuccoing, etc). Plus, it was on the wrong side of Gouda for my sister's work.
On Friday we went to Woerden to see this house. Basically it's the same house as the one we didn't get in De Meern, the lay-out has been changed over the years so it's a little bit different. It also needs some work; the floors are horrible, but will be a good base for anything we want to put over it (probably PVC flooring), the kitchen cabinets needs to be painted/wrapped, walls need to be painted (but you do that in every house you move in to), the washing machine needs to be moved from the middle of the attic landing to the little storage room on the same floor, and the gardens need to be tamed a bit. My sister would like to move the door into the living area to have a bigger seating area. But my sister can get to work fairly fast, the train station is a short walk from the house and there is no road in front or at the back of the house (but parking is still close by). Even if we put in a higher bid than asking price we'll have money left over in the budget to get most if not all things done. However, on of the biggest problems is that the old owners don't move out until June 1, 2024. And mortgage companies have a time limit on mortgages (between getting a mortgage and buying the house) of six months, so it'll be tight. Bids can be put in until Wednesday. Today my sister should hear from her purchasing agent what he thinks is a reasonable bid for this house. Meanwhile he'll also book a viewing at this house. It'll most like sell for over our budget, but it can't harm to have a look and if my sister gets the other house we can always cancel our appointment. |

And we missed out again. The house was up for €425,000, my sister put in a bid of €475,000 but someone else bid €485,000. It sucks, I really liked this house (even more than the first one we tried to buy).
For next week we've got two more viewings scheduled. But for me the attic in both houses have drawbacks. Plus, both them are already higher in price, so we won't have much room to overbid. |

AND, you don't know what will happen with the housing market, either. Sure, it might heat up; houses might--might--go up in price, which means that in two years, you'll be cursing that you didn't buy one now, but they may also drop like stones, in which case if you do buy, you'll be cursing that you did. The volatility of the housing market, the last 20 years, is a bit of a crapshoot--not like when I was young(er). But--as I said, you two (and your folks, etc.) do have a lot going on. A break mightn't be the worst thing ever. You could put most of your "things" in storage for now--lord, don't move twice!--and park them. Rent *and* look for a new place, take your time. The pressure of looking while you're going to move out of one place imminently can be...well, pressuring! Sorry you missed it! Hitch |

My sister hasn't put her apartment on the market yet, so sometime this month I'll be moving in with her. Her extra bedroom is tiny, which is why I've rented the storage room. Her realtor thinks her apartment will sell within two weeks, so I think she wants to wait until we've found something before listing it. My parents haven't found a new place yet. So mid December they're moving in to a bungalow (where pets are allowed) on a vacation park for three months, with the option to renew. The want to get an "senior apartment", which are apartment building for older people, where they offer extra's like food delivery (microwave dinners, but freshly made), organize things like billiard club, coffee moments and where the apartments are build to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs. They would prefer to get an apartment in the building my uncle (mother's brother) used to live in. Before they sold our place there were a lot of those types of apartments coming up for sale. But since then the availability has been scarce. After they move to the bungalow their movers will come and pack up anything they want to bring with them to their future apartment and it will be put into storage. Today we start with the last bit of sorting we have to do, but it's the one I've been least looking forward to. More tools. There are still 20 storage containers of those. Luckily they are not all full and each container holds it's own type of tools (ropes, painting, gas, water, etc). But since my father's garage is now almost full he'll have to start making decisions with these tools. |

Yeah, i got out of the shower at 5:15pm and realized how dark it had gotten outside my window. Going to notice it a LOT more when I leave the house at 5:45 tomorrow AM.

Oddly I appreciate that I now have more light in the early morning. I was reading an article from someone who was griping about losing a hour of daylight every day and wondered if the government stores up those hours or if the Illuminata or similar group does?

Watching/listening to the complex's parking lot being torn up. The lower half this week, the upper half next week.

I just finished the first half of my Christmas project. The first three cross stitches out of six. They are only 3 by 3 inches. I started on Friday and tonight finished the third one and framed them in small hoops and finished off the back with felt (which I'd already cut to size). They're for my sister, I'm seeing her tomorrow so I can give them to her then. Bonus of such a small and quick project is that it doesn't get dirty, so no need to wash.
