Struggling to begin setup

My previous N905 Touch stopped working last year. I bought another via ebay and I'm struggling to set it up. It's so long since I set up the previous one that I'm effectively starting again. I connected it to a USB port on my desktop PC (one good quality cable produced a message that there was too much power being drawn) and the screen went black with a Connected and Charging text, also telling me to download the Kobo Desktop software in order to set the reader up, which I had already done.

Nothing further has happened. The online manual refers to options that did not appear on the screen when I first turned it on (such as choosing wifi or connected setup). I tried a full reset, but once I chose my language and connected the cable, I still have the same black screen.

File Explorer does not show the device.

Any advice, please?

Does the Kobo Desktop app show that the device is connected? I'm assuming by "good quality cable" you mean a proper data cable, not charging cable?

Eventually the thing crashed completely, with the screen mostly black apart from some odd symbols. It won't even turn on - or off. The seller is accepting it back. That's the end of that one.

I'd buy a newer model. Many of those ancient models may no longer be in working order, and even if they are, they'll probably give up the ghost pretty soon.

Out of interest, could you post a pic of the screen? Glad the seller is doing the right thing. There's probably a reason they sold it.
