I'm starting to think 'AI' is the new 'cloud' or 'blockchain.'

I wonder if anybody ever updated that extension that autoreplaces 'the cloud' to 'my butt.'

This reminded me of a passage from The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Adams was a big tech geek and early adopter, but still kept grounded enough to write this:

Just had fun with one friend's purchase from Amazon. He purchased 3 1TB USB 3.0 flash drives. Basically a no-name thumb drive with a 1TB sticker on it. When he connected one to his computer, it showed as a 930GB device which is about right for a 1TB drive. Sadly after he started backing up his data to it, it hit about 250GB and then started reporting errors. Strangely, the other two drives did the same thing.

At which point he called me and then dropped over with the 3 drives. We tested them with RMPrepUSB, FakeFlashTest, CheckFlash, ChipGenius and a few other utilities (I have a flash drive with my collection of such utilities). Though after the first test, we needn't to have bothered since all tests indicated the same thing which is the flash drives were not 1TB drives and clocked in around 235GB. Not to mention that their VID/PID did not show up on an internet search.

He's now having the fun of returning them to Amazon and perhaps purchasing a 1TB USB 3.0 flash drive that is actually 1TB and USB 3.0 though he is going to pay a bit more than $10 Cdn per drive.

That's a pretty standard scam and they probably get away with it 95% of the time.

Is it even possible for legit USB drives to reach that capacity? I figure if there are, it wouldn't be some no-name thing from Amazon, lol.

Considering that when I looked at Amazon.ca and did a search on 1TB flash drives sorted by price low to high, I saw what the image below shows. Oddly, the drive looks identical down to the sticker to the 3 fakes my friend purchased.

There are several companies selling 2TB flash drives but they are too pricey for my budget. Of course, you could try the $15.45 2TB flash drive on Amazon.ca but it look rather familiar other than not using a sticker for the capacity.

Now I can't remember where I've seen on the web an amusing video showing that exactly same metallic flash drive, just the other day.

The video showed a guy fiddling with a cheap '2TB' black external hard drive and opening the enclosure, only to find that little metallic stick connected to the USB, instead of a real drive.

He then went on to open the metallic USB stick itself and found a micro SD card inside that thing.

(so, it was actually a SD card-to-USB adapter inside a drive enclosure)

wheee, I found it.

The thing was supposed to be a 4TB Seagate storage device.

Does that mean Apple's AirPods are not true wireless earbuds? Find My seems to work rather well with them.
