Kindle Unlimited monthly limit

I haven't seen this documented anywhere, so posting it here.

As of 2023, the Kindle Unlimited monthly limit appears to be 50 per day, based on how many days remaining in the subscription.

This means that if you have 2 days in your subscription left at the beginning of the month, you would be blocked a bit after 100 books.

When you are blocked, the server returns
Code:
                    "responseCode": "PROGRAM_BENEFIT_VIOLATION",
                    "result": "ku-monthly-limit-reached",
                    "resultCode": "KLU_TOTAL_LIMIT_REACHED",

Why would you want to borrow 50 books per day?

So you can trigger a massive flag in Amazon's management system?

Huh. Yes, never seen that before. I do go on big borrowing sprees with Kindle Unlimited, but it would never be 50 in a day. I can see having that limit because it's only suspicious.

I think exceeded them a few times last year. I was just flipping through a lot of magazines very quickly (as in 2-3 min/magazines). I didn't really keep count but I was pretty sure I go through more than 50 of them per day, so this limit must be somewhat new. (EDIT: Or, it was the beginning of my subscriptions month and I was pretty sure I didn't exceed 300 books, so I just wasn't affected)

I just can't see any reason to borrow 50 books/magazines in one day.

I can see occasionally stocking up on books right before a vacation away from WiFi. But 50 per day would be excessive even for that purpose IMHO. You do have to allow for the unreadable junk that is out there on KU, but still, 50 per day? I could see maybe 20 stocked up before a multi-week vacation, hoping to find two that are actually worthwhile.

When I used KU (I don't anymore) I used it to go through a lot of books - skimming them quickly as an extended "Look Inside!" - to see if I wanted to add them to my "buy" list. Even doing that, I probably was closer to 50 per month than 50 per day most of the time. I hate to say it, but the vast majority did not make my "buy" list, only a few did. I would think that "books out at a time" would be a more useful thing to put limits on than "books per day". But I don't know what Amazon is trying to accomplish here. It's no doubt accomplishing something for them, not for the customer. I would call "50 per day" ... "unlimited" basically. A limit that is functionally a non-limit.

Considering that KU has a limit of 20 books on loan at any time though this does not count magazines, you would have to be enthused to get through 20 books and 30 magazines per day on an ongoing basis. I still suspect that this is a limit that would trigger Amazon into investigating an account. I will admit to preferring preview— in most cases—to a KU loan when wanting to take a quick look at a book.

Say an average of 84,000 words in a book and say the average users has a reading speed of 300 wpm, you are looking at an average of 280 minutes (4.67 hours) to complete reading a book. I would drop that to 4 hours since most books tend to include quite a bit of content that I do not read—endless blurbs for other books, author biographies, etc. are not my preferred reading. Someone with a higher reading speed would get through more books but since most of us have a life outside of reading and do enjoy getting a few hours of sleep per day, even the outliers would be unlikely to read more than 8 books per day on an ongoing basis.

Have you ever have a stack of magazines/photobooks and you flip through everything quickly? I was doing the same but on KU. So I loan, flip through it so see if there are anything interesting, then return. Repeat and rinse. And since Amazon give you recommendation from your current loan it is just easier to go through more and more magazines.

In Japan you get like 2 pages preview for magazines.

I don't look at photobooks and as for magazines, I don't usually read them. We have no magazine subscriptions.

I thought one could only borrow 15 or so books at any one time with a Kindle Unlimited sub before having to return any if you wanted more. When did they change the limit? Or is this only for US subscribers? I'm in Canada and it's not always the same with some things Amazon & Kindle up here.

As a fellow Canadian, it's a limit of 20 books at one time. From the original post in this thread, if I picked up a KU loan, returned it, picked up another KU loan, rinse and repeat, I would only be able to do this for 50 books/magazines in one day.

My personal suspicion is that this is a measure to discourage reader farms and not something the normal KU user will ever run into.

Well, before I lost most of my vision, 20 books in a week would be about my usual from the library. Not counting buying paperbacks, zines & comics -- what can I say, I was one hella voracious reader. Have slowed down greatly these last few years, no paper books at all now, it's all on the Kobo. Used to do Kindle Unlimited on the computer & tablet but that way leads to even worse eye strain so I just got a new Paperwhite. Set it up last night, still trying to get the hang of it as it's different from my Libra, but I'm already past the halfway mark of my first book on that and quite a few more lined up. Got a feeling my Unlimited subscription will indeed be getting a workout now I can properly read their books.
