It's just that, in France at least, we have a name attached to each day, usually saints, like Florent, Pierre, Marguerite, ... Here, I've found these English articles in Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_day (sadly, no mention of the french names days here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_of_Saints The list has been expanded these last years to include names that are not part of the Christian tradition. We usually send wishes or say a kind word to people whose name is the saint of the day. Here is an english website with the french info : http://www.happynameday.com/Country.aspx?Country=French You can see the month of April on this page (French) : http://www.quelprenom.com/fetes.php Other resources give a day for each name, such as (French) : http://offrir-des-fleurs.wifeo.com/f...aiter-en-f.php Last edited by Gaurnim; 04-22-2009 at 06:09 AM.

Thank you Gaurnim! I have just spent a very pleasant 10 minutes looking up the names of family and friends. Name day not a tradition in my family, but I think I will start one. Mine is the 25th July. |

best tradition for saint days : give flowers to the person whose day it is ! it's an old tradition but i like it, even if it is dying out. now most people just say "bonne fête" if they notice it's your day...

it's pretty much a Catholic tradition, so unless that is a strong trad within your family, no surprise it's not a big deal.

(unless you are one of the unlucky ones whose parents named you for the saint of the day you were born. seems like a bit of a cheat to me. )

There is no Saint-Yvan. Apparently the name Yvan comes from Jean. I'm not too sure about that being true though. So as a kid my name was celebrated at the Saint-Jean Baptiste on the 24th of june which is the National day of Quebec. One day...
