At the time it was widely reported that one of the things that would be looked for was material that violated copyright. Has that been substantiated? And would it extend to DMCA violations (if in fact that's what might be involved in breaking DRM for personal use; I'm not sure)?

I don't know if it's actually legal to strip DRM, but it is legal to circumvent DRM in Denmark, provided it is necessary in order to access the content.

From what I can read, it is made clear that the intent of the law is make things as accessible while still protecting the rights holders. Thus it would likely not be of the concern of anyone if I stripped DRM of files I have bought, for my private personal use.

As far as I know, legal in france , if for interoperability reason.

Then, even if it was not, well. Better buy e-book and strip them off the drm than getting the ebooks though illegal means right ?

I would certainly not buy anything drmised unless i can take the drm off. I won't take the risk of losing all my e-book is the website i purchased them from closes.

Well, I bought lots of DRM'd LIT some years ago, to read them on my PocketPC.
I used Calibre recently to strip the DRM, and be able to convert them to MOBI or PRC in order to read them on my Cybook.
I don't have scruples about that, because I paid for them, and I don't see why I would have to buy them again in an other format...

Edit : An error here, ConvertLIT to strip DRM, then Calibre to convert into MOBI (or Mobipocket Creator to convert in PRC)

Calibre does not strip DRM, ConvertLIT does that and then Calibre format shifts the resulting DRM-free LIT. This keeps Calibre out of the DRM morass.

I bought my Kobo primarily to read library books. Lately I've been getting 3/4 of the way through a borrowed book and have to return it. If I really like the book and there's another hold on it, I buy it off Kobo or Kindle (whichever is cheaper) anyway.

That said, if I felt the need to read Kobo books on my Kindle or vice versa, I'd convert and un-DRM stuff I've purchased, but not otherwise.

This is true, as the statute regarding ebooks has never been challenged in court.
However, stripping copy protection on video and audio did wend its way through the courts, and it was ruled fair use.

I don't lose any sleep worrying that someone might search my netbook and SD cards and then sue me over back up files, or for changing covers and formatting.

the problem being the potential issue that some (probably myself included) people might react negatively to using software named clit!!

I believe the 2008 amendments made it legal in NZ to strip DRM for legitimate use (though I haven't parsed what that is). I don't live in NZ (rather AU) so perhaps someone local can comment.

You can read the law (bill that passed) here: http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/p...LM1122502.html

You can see some comments here;
