Quote:
In the fourth rip-roaring thriller in the award-winning Malabar House series, Persis and Archie travel to the old colonial capital of Calcutta, where they collide head-on with the prejudices and bloody politics of an era engulfed in flame.

'Beautifully written and a fascinating insight into the turbulence of post independence India' PETER MAY

'Another exuberant thriller in his award-winning Malabar House series ... as usual with Khan, an entire era and community are conjured with quiet panache' FINANCIAL TIMES

Can a white man receive justice in post-colonial India?
Bombay, 1950

James Whitby, sentenced to death for the murder of prominent lawyer and former Quit India activist Fareed Mazumdar, is less than two weeks from a date with the gallows. In a last-ditch attempt to save his son, Whitby's father forces a new investigation into the killing.

The investigation leads Inspector Persis Wadia of the Bombay Police to the old colonial capital of Calcutta, where, with the help of Scotland Yard criminalist Archie Blackfinch, she uncovers a possible link to a second case, the brutal murder of an African-American G.I. during the Calcutta Killings of 1946.

Are the cases connected? And if Whitby didn't murder Mazumdar, then who did?

The Satapur Moonstone is the second in Sujata Massey's Perveen Mistry series. I've read and quite liked the first and third books in the series, but somehow never the second. So I am happy to see Moonstone on sale at Kindle UK for £1.99.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CWF5BQF

Spoiler:
Quote:
The highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed novel The Widows of Malabar Hill.

India, 1922: It is rainy season in the lush, remote Sahyadri mountains, where the princely state of Satapur is tucked away. A curse seems to have fallen upon Satapur’s royal family, whose maharaja died of a sudden illness shortly before his teenage son was struck down in a tragic hunting accident. The state is now ruled by an agent of the British Raj on behalf of Satapur’s two maharanis, the dowager queen and her daughter-in-law.

The royal ladies are in a dispute over the education of the young crown prince, and a lawyer’s counsel is required. However, the maharanis live in purdah and do not speak to men. Just one person can help them: Perveen Mistry, Bombay’s only female lawyer. Perveen is determined to bring peace to the royal house and make a sound recommendation for the young prince’s future, but she arrives to find that the Satapur palace is full of cold-blooded power plays and ancient vendettas. Too late, she realizes she has walked into a trap. But whose? And how can she protect the royal children from the palace’s deadly curse?

To my mind, he's a horror author and wrote the highly acclaimed A Head Full of Ghosts.

BTW: Knock at the Cabin is available free on Prime Video.

M. Night Shyamalan is a popular punching bag. But I think he deserves better. To me, the only really terrible movie he's released is The Happening. Otherwise, some of his movies are better than others. But he is a talented director.

Chill of Night by John Lutz is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo. This is sometimes listed as part of a series called Night or The Night. But these are actually all standalone books centered on hunting a serial killer in New York. The titles all use the word Night. There is no continuity, no recurring characters.

I've read The Night Spider (aka Night Victims) and Fear the Night and enjoyed both.

Quote:
There's a twisted serial killer stalking the streets of New York City, dealing his own perverse version of justice. He kills swiftly and silently, leaving his calling card--a red "J"--on the bodies of his prey. His victims have one thing in common: they've all been jurors in the city's most infamous cases--cases in which the killer was found "not guilty." Overnight, the Justice Killer has the city in a stranglehold. And there's only one man who has a shot at finding him . . .

Homicide detective Artemis Beam made his reputation hunting down serial killers. After getting shot by an armed robber--and stepping on the wrong toes in the NYPD--he's been retired. The city needs him now, and finding the killer is his chance to get back into the life he loves. As the body count climbs and the city's legal system fails, the Justice Killer thinks he's outsmarted the cops. But Beam isn't officially a cop anymore . . . and he doesn't have to play by the rules . . .

Shadows in Death is the 51st Eve Dallas book by JD Robb. It's $2.99 right now in the US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082RRR1BB
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/shadows-in-death-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the new novel in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series, Lt. Eve Dallas is about to walk into the shadows of her husband’s dangerous past…

While Eve examines a fresh body in Washington Square Park, her husband, Roarke, spots a man among the onlookers he’s known since his younger days on the streets of Dublin. A man who claims to be his half brother. A man who kills for a living—and who burns with hatred for him.

Eve is quick to suspect that the victim’s spouse—resentful over his wife’s affair and poised to inherit her fortune—would have happily paid an assassin to do his dirty work. Roarke is just as quick to warn her that if Lorcan Cobbe is the hitman, she needs to be careful. Law enforcement agencies worldwide have pursued this cold-hearted killer for years, to no avail. And his lazy smirk when he looked Roarke’s way indicates that he will target anyone who matters to Roarke…and is confident he’ll get away with it.

Eve is desperate to protect Roarke. Roarke is desperate to protect Eve. And together, they’re determined to find Cobbe before he finds them—even if it takes them across the Atlantic, far outside Eve’s usual jurisdiction…

You Can’t See Me by Eva Björg Ægisdóttir is $1 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US. This is book 4 in the Forbidden Iceland series, though it is a prequel. Books 1-3 were on sale at one point.

Quote:
A wealthy Icelandic family is investigated and dark secrets are exposed when a body is found on the lava fields outside the hotel where they' ve gathered for a reunion ... the chilling, gripping prequel to the addictive Forbidden Iceland series

The wealthy, powerful Snæ berg clan has gathered for a family reunion at a futuristic hotel set amongst the dark lava flows of Iceland' s remote Snæ fellsnes peninsula.

Petra Snæ berg, a successful interior designer, is anxious about the event, and her troubled teenage daughter, Lea, whose social-media presence has attracted the wrong kind of followers. Ageing carpenter Tryggvi is an outsider, only tolerated because he' s the boyfriend of Petra' s aunt, but he' s struggling to avoid alcohol because know what happens when he drinks ... Humble hotel employee, Irma, is excited to meet this rich and famous family and observe them at close quarters ... perhaps too close...

As the weather deteriorates and the alcohol flows, one of the guests disappears, and it becomes clear that there is a prowler lurking in the dark.

But is the real danger inside ... within the family itself?

Masterfully cranking up the suspense, Eva Björg Ægisdóttir draws us into an isolated, frozen setting, where nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted, as the dark secrets and painful pasts of the Snæ berg family are uncovered ... and the shocking truth revealed.
