Cross-posted to Horror.
The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Novella.
Quote:
Tense, claustrophobic sci-fi/horror blend set aboard a doomed generation ship harboring something terrible within its walls.

As acting captain of the starship Calypso, Jacklyn Albright is responsible for keeping the last of humanity alive as they limp back to Earth from their forebears’ failed colony on a distant planet.

Faced with constant threats of starvation and destruction in the treacherous minefield of interstellar space, Jacklyn's crew has reached their breaking point. As unrest begins to spread throughout the ship’s Wards, a new threat emerges, picking off crew members in grim, bloody fashion.

Jacklyn and her team must hunt down the ship’s unknown intruder if they have any hope of making it back to their solar system alive.

Arch-Conspirator by Veronica Roth is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Novella. Antigone retelling.
Quote:
"I'm cursed, haven't you heard?"

Outside the last city on Earth, the planet is a wasteland. Without the Archive, where the genes of the dead are stored, humanity will end.

Antigone's parents -- Oedipus and Jocasta -- are dead. Passing into the Archive should be cause for celebration, but with her militant uncle Kreon rising to claim her father's vacant throne, all Antigone feels is rage.

When he welcomes her and her siblings into his mansion, Antigone sees it for what it really is: a gilded cage, where she is a captive as well as a guest.

But her uncle will soon learn that no cage is unbreakable. And neither is he.

The Serpent is part of The Gameshouse. You might as well get the omnibus.
I think 84K is primarily science fiction.

John Brunner's The Shockwave Rider is $1.99 at Amazon. I already got it on sale a few years back, so didn't notice it...I suspect it's been on sale all month!

The Pandora Sequence by Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom are all on sale:
The Jesus Incident - $2, Amazon, B&N and Kobo
The Lazarus Effect - $3, Amazon, B&N and Kobo
The Ascension Factor - $3, Amazon, B&N and Kobo

The series is a follow-up to another Herbert book: Destination: Void. But it is not necessary to have read that one to read this trilogy. There's a reason it is not included in the collected volume.

Edit: There's also a collected book. It's $8.50 at B&N and Kobo, but Amazon has it on sale for $2!

Having to mull this one over. On the one-hand, I really want to stop supporting Amazon and buy exclusively from Kobo or elsewhere. OTOH, money...

The upside is that it looks like the collected novel version goes on sale for this price every couple of months:

I'm with you. I bought it from Amazon, but bought the Haruki Murakami book from Kobo.

Liu Cixin's Death’s End, the 3rd installment (and last entry in the “real” trilogy) of his famous Three-Body Problem series, is 99p today at Amazon UK (and £4.99 at Kobo UK, but should be eligible for their Price Match Guarantee).

Warning, on Amazon this seems to be a different edition, and doesn't show the 'You already own this book' banner, even if you have bought it previously.

The books and stories in Mike Resnick's "Birthright" universe truly can be read in any order at all. Even the ones that are clearly sequential internally within the ouvre (Santiago, Widowmaker, Soothsayer/Oracle/Prophet as "miniseries". Maybe the three Eros books make more sense in order, but that's about it.) each book provides enough individual background that not only to they work as stand-alones, they can also make the earlier books more intriguing ("how did Penelope survive before this?")

For me, it was great fun to stumble across a favorite character from a previous book, and it really doesn't matter if the adventure you're reading comes before or after one you've read before.
