[I mentioned that Christopher Tolkien is now apparently co-author of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit]
Will this mean, then, that Lord of the Rings and Hobbit will pass into Public Domain 50 years after after death of Christopher Tolkien? Or perhaps his children will make some further editing and join the authors list? |

The text of his specific editions, certainly. He's made corrections and added annotations that were not in previous versions.

That's great news, I have managed to lose my softcover copy of The Two Towers. Getting the trilogy will be a great re-read on the Kindle.

It has been a very long time since I last posted on this site since the focus has moved to dedicated ebook readers and I am still a PDA-based reader using eReader and Mobipocket.
Tonight I felt I needed to put in my two cents worth on the quality of these ebooks. In one word I have to say the quality is TERRIBLE. I saw literally hundreds of typos in just the first few pages of each of the books I purchased in eReader format. I got The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Children of Hurin. Most of the typos are the clear result of poorly proofed optical scans of the books. The result is words that have been run together on virtually every page. I find that there are SO many errors that it interferes with my reading enjoyment, making the books unreadable. I expect more from companies like Harper Collins and I am sorry I bought them from Fictionwise, which won't refund my money. |

Are you sure this is not the same problem spotted in the other topic about comparison of eBook format here (and the next post by pilotbob)?

These are not OCR errors, but a result of a poor quality conversion to the eReader format. I suspect that fictionwise will re-do the conversion shortly, and fix these problems. (Essentially, they forgot that a line break in XHTML should be treated as a space, which is why a lot of spaces are missing.)
This fault does not exist in the other formats. Quote:

I didnt have a darknet copy, but I would have chucked it now - still I will wait to buy those (great and long-awaited) books in electronic form till (at least) some of the errors stated in this (and other) thread(s) are corrected.

Tolkien died in 1973. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were published before he died. They will come into the public domain in most countries on 1st January 2044, unless the law is changed before then.
I think that versions of the texts published after his death with minor corrections will also be in the public domain then, as the changes are not sufficiently significant to count as a new text subject to a new copyright. Introductions and commentaries, of course, do have their own copyrights. |
