In a change from the house-hunting discussion, I'm cooking. My wife has been pretty under the weather, so I'm making Chungah Reeh's Cold Fighting Chicken Noodle Soup today. I think I might also bake some fresh parker rolls to go with it

That sounds DELISH. I can't wait for soup-weather...I was sadly looking at some frozen leeks I have, just yesterday, dying to make some potato-and-leek soup or the like but it's still nearly 100F here!

And your Parkers sound great. We've been messing around with Tangzhou, (we make slightly sweet rolls to have 'round the place pretty routinely) but we don't seem to be able to 'get it' just yet.

My rolls recipe came from a cooking couple blog (that I must've come accross aggregated on a place like Yummly). I hadn't ever even seen their website until I went looking for it to post here. I've had the same paper copy of the recipe for years that I've made some notes an alterations on.

60 Minute Dinner Rolls (yeast/Parker rolls as they are often called)

Thanks for sharing! This recipe is very similar to the weekly/bi-weekly rolls that we make. I'll see if we can give them a go.

I'm all about winter food--I mean, for us, in Arizona, "comfort" food like soups, stews, casseroles, yadda, you really don't typically make in summer or even in the shoulder seasons. Cannot WAIT for soup season to start! And OMG, fresh hot homemade soup with rolls/fresh hot rustic bread? Swwooooooning here....

LOL.

Not making fun of people, really but, it's true, it's all what you're used to.)
When we were on vacation last year we visited Gouda and loved it. It's got the right amount small, independent stores and bigger stores. Sure, it's touristy with the cheese market (but, CHEESE!). It isn't as bad as Utrecht (yet), after Covid Amsterdam has been trying to discourage the party/weed tourist and it seems that Utrecht welcomes them.

The house is near the Reeuwijkse Plassen (man made lakes and forest), where you can have nice walks and some swimming beaches. For my sister it's a 26 minute car ride to her work, according to Google Maps, and according to a colleague living in Gouda traffic isn't too bad during rush hour. My sister's got her driving license and a car. I have neither, but I want to get my license next year, but I would want to work in a store locally. Easily reachable by bike.

My sister did look at the house and was also interested. The ground floor needs redecoration to make it lighter, and you have enough money left over to make it more energy efficient. She's going to see if she can make appointments for both this house and the other one during the first week of our vacation.

I know that my opinion--or that of anyone aside from you and sis--doesn't matter and I do, truly, appreciate you sharing all the house-hunting with us (fun to live vicariously!!) but I truly say "if you like it, move on it." I suspect that cute sucker could go very fast. And the wee town sounds terrific, too.

My sister is still figuring out how to pay for it. The money/tax man she spoke to advised to first sell her apartment before signing for a new house (get a clause that we could stay for a while). That way you don't have the cost of two houses, when you have that the bank assumes that will last a full year. The real estate agent who appraised her apartment advised to find a new place first and then put her apartment up for sale. The agent was sure her apartment will sell within two or three weeks, since it's considered a starter home.

I think she'll have to talk to her bank and see what they say. It's all things we're going to discuss during our vacation. Mind you, it's her money, so she not only decides how she wants to do it. And she ultimately decides which house she's going to buy.

Wish me luck.

Today we start sorting through the upstairs. Whereas I spend most of my time packing up the store on my own, now it'll on my parents. I'm just there to get things from where they are stored, pack them or put them in the throw away, leave or donate pile.

I'm expecting much discussion between my parents about things my mother doesn't want to keep and my father wants to keep. I've already let them know I do not want part of those discussions, but I expect both will try. I'm fully expecting I will need to get angry about that this week to get them off my back for a little while.

Next Monday, and my vacation, can't come soon enough.
