Question New computer… "This book has DRM" :-/

Hello,

I finally migrated from Win7 to Win10… only to find that Calibre (6.26.0) is unable to remove the DRM from a book I downloaded from the library using Adode Digital Editions (3.0.1.91364, the same I had on the old computer).

It's been years, so have no idea if I had to configure Calibre to work.

Does someone know?

Thank you.

---
Edit: Apparently, it not possible to delete a thread. I found you have to add this plug-in to remove DRMs from EPUBs.

Don't use epubor. They steal code. Look up NoDRM's fork of DeDRM on github.

Not if it's a regular library (no tracking of reading for payments) and you delete the ebook when loan expired / "return" made.

It is copyright violation to keep a working copy of a library electronic book beyond loan period. It's simple theft to keep a borrowed physical item and refuse to return it, no matter if a library or something else.

It's copyright violation to distribute copies of a copyright book no matter if purchase price was zero.

It's not technically theft, as in stealing a paperback from a library.

However removing DRM or making a copy of copyrighted subscription material (Kindle Unlimited, Kobo Plus, Netflix, Spotify) etc is both copyright violation and theft of service. It may also result in publisher or author not getting paid. Same as watching Pay TV from cable or satellite without the legitimate subscription.

Note that penalty for copyright violation in most countries is not a set tariff but either based on copyright holders loss, or whatever their lawyers persuade a judge or jury in a civil action, but theft or "theft of service" usually has fixed maximum tariffs in a criminal prosecution.

Naturally rights holders or subscription providers prefer the civil action for copyright violation, where they get the money and costs. With criminal cases the fine goes to the State and the "victim" usually only gets the compensation of a returned stolen item.

What reason would you have for removing drm from a library book?

Personally I don't because I might forget to delete it, because it creates an additional copy. Also I don't own it, it's a loan so I'd not want to remove the DRM. Two good reasons to never remove DRM on borrows.

The main reason that some justify removing it and are not keeping a copy is if the formatting is really obnoxious, or the Library app is poor or they want to read on an eink reader that doesn't support that DRM.

I got an Android eink so as to use the local library's app on eink instead of my tablet.

I've never removed DRM from any library or subscription digital content.

Honestly, I didn't see the word 'library.'

Adobe Digital Editions sends as ePub. I prefer kepub. I delete the format from my library (leaving behind a stub record to track reading history) once it's on device, then the book from my device once it's read.

Don't forget to delete it from your ADE library. The problem is, it expires but is still there and can still have the DRM removed. Also, if you delete it from the library, while ADE won't see it, it's still there. So you can once again remove the DRM. You have to remove it from the ADE library and then delete it.

I use the ACSM Input plugin, so no worries there, lol.

I do end up with a lot of useless .acsm files in my download folder - I keep meaning to make a batch file for scheduled cleanups but procrastination.

Every so often, I go to the download directory and delete the lot.

What I need to do is clean up my ADE directory. Most likely, delete the lot after I backup my calibre libraries.

Personally I remove so I can use in a different app. I use cool reader with tts. With kindle app for android when you stop talkback it goes back to beginning of page. Cool reader let's you pause on the last word you were on. I find cool reader uses less battery.

I use is so I can easily copy it on my e-reader, and don't have to read it within the 30 days set by the library.
