Terraform: Watch/Worlds/Burn Edited by Brian Merchant and Claire L. Evans is $4 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
A best-of collection of the naer-future SF stories published by Vice's Terraform project.
The editor described the contents as:
Quote:
Our anthology will contain some of the best of Terraform’s six-year run, and it will be loaded with new stuff, too: an original essay by the great Cory Doctorow, fresh context from us editors (that’s Brian Merchant and Claire L. Evans, hi) and new stories from Omar El Akkad, Ellen Ullman, Tochi Onyebuchi, Jeff VanderMeer, Elvia Wilk, and Joanne McNeil, among many others.
but since then, I think some, if not all, of the exclusive stories have been published online.

Mary Robinette Kowal's Hugo-shortlisted The Spare Man is £0.99 in the UK today. I saw the deal at Amazon, but it looks like it's also that price on the publisher's website, so I guess it's on sale everywhere:

https://rebellionpublishing.com/product/the_spare_man/

Kindle link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spare-Man-M.../dp/B0BHBNRYMB

Note that it's published by Rebellion in the UK and Tor in the US, so I imagine there's no deal there.

I’m havering about getting it. The price point is much higher than usual:

Bodard: have the complete trilogy
Blaylock: have the complete trilogy but in paperback
Khaw: have the omnibus of the first 2
Lee: got it in a Hugo package
Hurley: got the complete trilogy
Chu has not crossed our radar, and the rest we have book 1. Besides, it’s more to himself’s taste than mine.

At $33 for the full collection, it’s borderline. If I hadn’t already got the Bodards, it would be viable, but as we have half the titles already…

Set This House in Order by Matt Ruff is $3 in the US (Kobo US, Kobo WW, Amazon.com)
Quote:
Andy Gage was born in 1965 and murdered not long after by his stepfather. . . . It was no ordinary murder. Though the torture and abuse that killed him were real, Andy Gage's death wasn't. Only his soul actually died, and when it died, it broke in pieces. Then the pieces became souls in their own right, coinheritors of Andy Gage's life. . . .

While Andy deals with the outside world, more than a hundred other souls share an imaginary house inside Andy's head, struggling to maintain an orderly coexistence: Aaron, the father figure; Adam, the mischievous teenager; Jake, the frightened little boy; Aunt Sam, the artist; Seferis, the defender; and Gideon, who wants to get rid of Andy and the others and run things on his own.

Andy's new coworker, Penny Driver, is also a multiple personality, a fact that Penny is only partially aware of. When several of Penny's other souls ask Andy for help, Andy reluctantly agrees, setting in motion a chain of events that threatens to destroy the stability of the house. Now Andy and Penny must work together to uncover a terrible secret that Andy has been keeping . . . from himself.

Fire Time by Poul Anderson is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

I've only yet read Brain Wave by Anderson, but really enjoyed it.

Quote:
In this classic science fiction adventure, a fiery doomsday threatens an alien world—and the human colonists who have made it their home.

Firetime is coming to Ishtar. This once-in-a-millennium event occurs when one of the planet’s three suns encroaches on Ishtar’s surface, to disastrous effect. The nightmare rapidly approaching, barbaric tribes have declared war on their more civilized brethren in hopes of avoiding a natural extermination. Standing between the opposing forces are the colonists who settled on Ishtar after abandoning their home planet, Earth. But in this time of chaos and destruction, there is little the humans can do to aid their Ishtarian allies in the desperate fight for survival. The Terran powers, engaged in their own terrible conflict with a hostile alien race, will offer no help to the endangered planet. With a fiery doomsday on the way, the humans can do nothing but watch and wait—and pray for a miracle that will forestall the inevitable apocalypse.

A stunning work of speculative invention from one of the all-time masters of science fiction and fantasy, Poul Anderson’s classic Fire Time is a richly imagined tale of war, alien contact, and environmental catastrophe that brilliantly questions the concepts of right and wrong, good and evil, and heroism and villainy.

I enjoyed the fantasy novels by Anderson that I read--The Broken Sword and Three Hearts and Three Lions--but I haven't touched his sci-fi yet. Looking at his bibliography, the latter greatly outnumbers the former.

I have both and intend to read them. I like fantasy that was published before Tolkien took over the fantasy genre (well, I guess The Hobbit had already been published).

Anderson and his wife also wrote the King of Ys books, set in a fantastical version of Rome. (Book 1 is on sale for $3 and book 2 is on sale for $2.)

I can recommend Brain Wave. It's been years since I read it, but I remember enjoying it. Old timey Big Idea science fiction.

I've also heard good things about Tau Zero, but haven't yet read it.

I heartily recommend both books. The Broken Sword is IMO one of the very best dark fantasy books,

@Zodwallop Thank you for Fire Time. For once the offer was also available here in Denmark.

Edit: Make sure you get the 1954 edition. I read somewhere that the the author made a milder revison of the original, because he found a little too rough.
