I've used Calibre since I bought my first SONY-PRS-T1 without problems. I plug in my brand new Clara-2E and get the following:

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but deleting books and managing collections is disabled. If you are willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to Factory defaults, you can override this check by right clicking the device icon in calibre and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. Doing so may require you to perform a Factory reset of your Kobo.

Update Calibre. You're using an old version.

What version of calibre and what OS are you running? If it's Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, upgrade calibre to the latest version.

If you are using the KoboTouch driver, you want to do the following.

1. Go to Preferences
2. Search for kobotouch
3. Click Customize plugin
4. Go to the Medatadata. on device & advanced tab
5. Under Advanced options, check Attempt to support newer firmware
6. Click OK
7. Click Apply
8. Click Close

If you are using ther KoboTouchExtended driver, select that wen you get the search results. Everything else is the same.

Please note that the second part of Jon's instructions are only needed when you are on the latest calibre version and you are using new firmware that is not currently supported. I have never seen an issue with using Kobo's firmware with that option selected in the Kobo Touch/Kobo Touch Extended drivers but, in my near infinite pessimism, I expect it to happen sooner or later. Given that there are some Kobo beta testers who post on MobileRead, a warning about such issues is going to be posted before the release firmware is seen by the normal user.

I get the error Error writing to file: D:\Program Files\calibre2\app\bin\84e-4505.rbf. Verify you have access to that directory.

My account is the only account on the system and it is an administrator account. The permissions look good to me.

Linux is easier, I just sudo to root and use screen but all the software I use runs under windows.

I'm trying to update to 6.25.0 by double clicking on the install file like I always do. I don't think I've upgraded calibre under win 10, the last time was under win 7.

I'm trying to update to 6.25.0 by double clicking on the install file like I always do. I don't think I've upgraded calibre under win 10, the last time was under win 7.

Is your Windows 10 the latest version and 64-bit? Calibre 6 needs a 64-bit Windows and as for Windows 10, calibre 6 won't run if Windows 10 is too early a version.

You should update to calibre 6.25.0. That works with this firmware without the need to follow my directions.

The update failed, The error message is in one of my messages above. My account is supposed to be the administrator account. The disks were moved from the old computer (Win 7 pro 64) to the new computer (Win 10 pro 64).

Try the following. Make a copy of your config directory just to be safe. Next uninstall calibre. Then install the latest version.

If that doesn't work, try rebooting in safe mode and trying to install the current version. It could be something running on your system is causing the problem.

Does the 84e-4505.rbf directory even exist?

Does the calibre installer give you the UAC popup? If not, try right clicking and Run as Administrator.

You can also try uninstalling calibre and then removing the calibre2 directory from Program Files. This will not affect your library or calibre settings.

If that doesn't work, you may have to remove the calibre configuration directory as well but make sure to record your settings/plugins before doing so.

Unless you played games with the installer, I think that calibre 6 will not install on Windows 7.

Is your Win 10 the latest version? If it's too old a version of Win 10 it will not install. Also, your Win 10 needs to be 64-bit. If it's not, you will have to install Win 10 64-bit and basically start over.

I reinstalled calibre. It has accepted the kobo utilities but I don't see how to mark all the books I've downloaded as read. The kobo seems to overly emphasize the kobo store way over the books you own. It is very disappointing. I'll try it out but if I don't figure out how to mark all the books in it as read it will join the junk heap of readers I've tried.

You can hide Home (Kobo Shopping generally) by editing the config
SideloadedMode=true.

Search in the KoboUtilities in Cabibre or ask there about marking books read. You need to follow instruction in the KoboUtilities

Patches work even better then sidloadmode (which I do not like) as I like the home screen.
