They can add stuff to MTP without throwing it away, like authorisation only a desktop Amazon program knows, to prevent other programs connecting. Or additional DRM

MTP allows MTP Initiators to identify the specific capabilities of device(s) with respect to file formats and functionality. In particular, MTP Initiators may have to provide passwords and other information to unlock files, or otherwise enable digital rights management.

The most charitable explanation I can come up with for this feature is that it makes Disconnect more visible and 'standardized' than poking around to find the Eject feature of the file system in question, since it is done by tapping the Disconnect button on the Kindle for all platforms. I bet a lot of people neglect to Eject before unplugging USB devices (I forget to do it all too frequently myself).

Perhaps it is also more fault tolerant if you unplug the cable while file transfer is in progress, where with USB storage media it can cause data corruption. I don't know enough about MTP to know if this is the case. Tapping the Disconnect button with file transfer in progress would give Kindle a chance to close the session cleanly (either finish current file transfer or cancel it).

I used to be able to connect Kindle to my iPad for file transfers. Guessing this is not possible now, but I'll check.

But it is good to know about the less charitable scenarios as well.

Yes, USB Mass Storage gadgets can be also used by Android phones/tablets that have a host mode. Sometimes you need a Y cable and separate power. Keyboard, mouse, USB CD/DVD drive, USB HDD all work on my Android 5 Sony phone via a powered hub. It also has a physical HD HDMI out miniature socket. Screencast seems rubbish in comparison.

I'll be interest to read if iPad can have an MTP client. I've never tried it on Android.

Apparently it does not. Scribe connects and goes into transfer mode, but Files app does not show it.

As long as we are looking on the bright side of things, one additional benefit of MTP is that Mac won't be able to create ._ and .Trashes/ junk any more.

Only Scribe is using MTP right now. And the next version of calibre will fix the issues with Kindles using MTP.

Probably not possible, given platform restrictions. I only used this a few times, mostly to get updates onto a Kindle.

With one of those times, the update bricked a Voyage I had at the time. Not sure this provenance was a factor. But I regret not trying harder to unbrick. I think it had stopped mounting on USB. But easy to remove the back and maybe there's some hard reset possible in there.

I worked at LG and we were working on a webOS smart watch prototype at the time (never shipped). When it got bricked you could go in and short out a couple of contacts to get it going again.

Lucky derives from Lak-Hui Chemical Industrial Corp, which GoldStar merged with in 1995, becoming Lucky-GoldStar for a time. They acquired Zenith Electronics that same year. I remember seeing some paperwork when I worked in the Santa Clara office that had Zenith on it for some reason, and happened to drive past the office on a visit to Illinois last year.

The webOS group started out as Palm, and they did a webOS phone, arguably 'the first smart phone' (one of the people I worked with had one still working), and Apple poached a couple of people to work on the first iPhone. HP bought them, there was a webOS tablet, which HP killed and then sold the group to LG. We worked on the webOS TVs.

I did not work there for very long, but it was pretty fun until they laid off more than half of us in favor of doing things in India and Seoul. Got to travel to SK in the middle of winter. Nook office was a couple of blocks away.

I have a Palm Z22 and I remember the later WebOS on Palm. But the first Smart Phone was 1998 and I had a Nokia Communicator 9110i in 2000 and the 2nd version of the Nokia 9210i in 2002. The symbian on 9210i was superior to later Symbain phones (internal Politics in 2003). Those were certainly real smartphones.
Didn't WebOS phone come after both Apple (2007) and Android (2008)?
There were prototype 4G (not LTE or WiMax, but Flarion) smart phones running Debian before the iPhone release, but they don't count as never released and Qualcomm bought Flarion and buried it purely for 4G patents.

I remember the Danger Hiptop SideKick (2003 approx). Microsoft managed to fail WinCE phones, bought Danger and failed it and bought Nokia's phone division (for $11B without name or IP) and failed it and put Windows Phone (based on Zune GUI rather than Win CE) GUI on Win8 and failed both of those. Oh, there was once a Microsoft Watch and a Tablet Edition of Windows 3.x (not NT) before Win95.

I do remember "playing" with a fellow Engineer's Treo.
The first smartphone was IBM's made by Mitsubishi in 1994 and the term is from 1995. But Nokia's was the first successful one in 1998.
Nokia had made paper and welly-boots, then TVs, satellite setboxes and then some PCs before doing phones. They still do Telecom systems and the Nokia phone brand is licenced to TCL, who always made Alcatel phones.
